Restaurant near Madison Square Garden

A family group of about 10, adults and teenagers, will be seeing the Christmas Show at the Garden on a Sunday in December. Any suggestions for a spot for an early dinner in the area?

I honestly cannot think of a good restaurant in that area.

Becco is always a good choice for groups.

Tupelo Grill. One of the best steakhouses in midtown. Right across the street.

Mustang Harry's on 27th and 7th. It's nothing more than a pub/restaurant - rather large and loud, especially before sporting events and concerts. Decent burger, etc.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Not looking for fine dining but just a good place where hopefully we can make reservations. It doesn't have to be real close to the Garden. Is there anything between there and Times Square area?

I think the Irish pub Tir na nOg was a good suggestion. The Supreme Macaroni Factory on 9th ave betw 38-39 could be a fun place for a large group. It's not great food but decent red sauce Italian with chianti bottles on the ceiling and red checkered table cloths. Carmine's at 44th betw b'way & 8th gets better food scores from Zagat but I find it too noisy & hectic. You might not mind. Angus McIndoe on the same street as Carmine's has American food.

Try Biricchino 260 West 29th St. - at 8th Avenue, really pretty good Italian - very homey and they make their own terrific sausages. Reserve early.

Tupelo Grill is good--not really a steakhouse--good mixed menu. If you want a steakhouse, what I believe is THE BEST one in NYC is Keen's at 36th St and 6th Ave. If you want something casual and low key, Ben's Kosher Deli is only a few blocks away (38th Street), and it is very good if you want that type of food. Those are really the highlights of the Garden area.

As someone mentioned, Keene's is a good steakhouse. http://www.keenssteakhouse.com

There is Market Cafe on 9th between 37th & 38th. Timeout actually includes this restaurant in their "TONY 100" although it's hard for me to understand why. It's good American fare (pasta, steak, chicken) at reasonable prices ($10-$15). Definitely call ahead with a large group because it's not that big.

I recommend Ginger House on 7th Avenue between 28th and 29th. It's Chinese food, and specializes in Chinese BBQ. The pork is my favorite. Prices are cheap, and it's one of the few restaurants where I always see kids. It's a big space with high ceilings. I know they take reservations because I've gone to several work celebrations there.
