Restaurant Near London NYC Hotel
 

We'll be staying at the London NYC in the West 50's. We're looking for upscale restaurants nearby for lunch where I won't have to wear a jacket. I am considering the restaurant at MOMA one day but would like some other suggestions. Thanks.

Well - if you really mean upscale - with no jacket - it's sort of a non-sequiter.

But- if you want good food - at the prices that imples, trendy and not too formal try

Bar Americaine - new american

Trattoria DelArte - italian with great anitpasto

I guess you are right: summer business casual.

If you like seafood, Le Bernardin is probably the best in NYC and right nearby. I don't know about a jacket.

Gordon Ramsey's rest. is right in your hotel and certainly fits the bill.
Any of the places in the Time Warner building at Columbus Circle would also work. Asiate, in the Mandarin Oriental on the 35th floor has a great view.

Btw, La Bonne Soup is a very casual place with good food, but not would I'd call upscale.

Asiate without a jacket is hard (they require "smart business" which doesn't sound like a polo shirt). Would think Le Barnardineis the same.

Landmarc in the TimeWarner Center.

The Modern is fantastic and you shouldn't need a jacket there.

Some great suggestions. So far, I'm interested in Bar Americain, Landmarc at Time Warner, and perhaps Asiate (for pretheater dinner). Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

As far as lunch dress code goes, would "smart business" be sport jacket with no tie or would a long sleeve, button-down shirt be acceptable?

Whatever you do, do not go to Oceana. Went the first time 2 1/2 years ago and it was fabulous. Went back a few months ago and it was terrible. Heard the table next to us complaining as well.

A friend has suggested Bouchon Bakery. No reservations? A long wait?

good but a little bit expensive for what it is. limited seating area in the actual restaurant part. It's in the middle of the Time Warner Center so it's like dining in a mall overlooking the entrace.
There's also a takeout counter next to the restaurant where you can pick up fantastic homemade nutterbutters, macarons, and something like oreo cookies (i think, i haven't tried them) plus quiches and other sandwiches.

It's right next door to the Landmarc restaurant. I haven't actually eaten at the actual restaurant part so can't say about the wait time, have only picked up foods from the take out part. It's a great place to pick something up and go eat in Central Park or in Columbus Circle proper.

What about Landmarc at Time Warner? The reviews I read were not great but the concept sounded like what I was looking for.

Have not been to the landmarc uptown but the one downtown is very casual.Most upscale restaurants will probably not stick to the jacket rule for lunch.Asiate does not require jackets for lunch-agreat choice especially for the view.Agree with Mclaurie's rec.We had dinner at Gordon Ramsey's restaurant and it was excellent.They have a lunch menu as well that is not as expensive.Le Cirque is in that neighborhood also.
The Modern is a great choice as well.
For more casual but upscale and where jackets are definitely not required.
Eleven Madison Park,Tabla,Toucqiville-(spelling),Country upstairs,Gramacy tavern,IMO Sparks has the best filet in NYC but I do not think that is what you are looking for.

I've only been to the new Landmarc uptown once right when it first opened. Very beautiful space. Food was good. Since then like you I am sure, I have heard the rumors about poor service and food. Hard to say what it is like now.

I wouldn't cross it off your list. The food is not quite as "precious" as Bouchon Bakery and the space/atmosphere is certainly much better.

We did lunch at Asiate and were a little disappointed. Despite reserving way ahead we didn't even get a view table -- thanks to two large groups and a rearranged dining room that day. I can't say I was overwhelmed with much of anything there except the prices for what it was. Service was really poor, maybe because of the bigger groups. It just didn't seem to be the big deal I thought it would be and none of our dishes "knocked our socks off". We wore sport jackets and open shirts. A number of men had only long sleeve dress shirts.

I LOVE having lunch at the Bar at MOMA. I think it was pure perfection. Sure, it's pricey -- probably more than Asiate -- but worth every penny in my book. Jackets really not necessary for lunch. Many do, but that's because there are so many businessmen eating there at lunch.

You'll never hear a single bad word from me about LeBernardin unless it makes a huge change. Perfection. But I'm pretty sure you must wear jacket, and I personally wouldn't go there without a tie, even for lunch.

Funny thing about Landmarc. I've never eaten there, but we stood just outside one day thinking about seeing if we could get in for a late lunch without reservations. While standing there two different couples came out. One was saying "well, we won't be coming back here again soon" and the other was something equally negative. We decided not to stay, but have no idea what the problems were.
