Restaurant in Westchester
My father recently passed away. My mother hasn't been out much since so I want to take her out to a nice lunch in the southern Westchester area. She lives in the northeast Bronx and I will have a car. We would like any suggestions anyone would have for a nice afternoon.

Sorry about your Dad. If the weather stays nice, a walk around the Botanical Gardens might be lovely. I think that the Chihuly glass exhibit will be there until the end of the month and it is spectacular. There is a nice cafe on the premises.

Sorry for your loss.
What cuisine are you interested in eating? Budget? Is your mom mobile or does she have restrictions that may prevent her from certain kinds of activities other than lunch {I am just assuming she is a senior, forgive me if I am wrong}? This will help to get you some suggestions based replies on above questions. Debi |
Would Tarrytown be too far away?
There are some nice restaurants there and it is a pretty little town to walk around and spend a nice afternoon. There is a nice Italian place with the name Lake Como in it, I am sorry, I cannot remember the name. Or drive over to Rockland County and have lunch in one of the many nice places in Nyack or Piermont NY. If you were interested, I will post restaurants. My condolences ((F)) |
Best wishes to you and Mom.
My Mom lives in Bronxville. It is a great little town to stroll any time of the year. I think the prettiest in the area. They keep up on their window boxes and have a number of lovely restaurants. Fantastic churches of all denominations and a beautiful library with some very nice artwork. Actually you could park and take the train to the botanical gardens on the commuter rail and make a day of it. Or if ocean would be nice, sometimes we go to Ocean city and swing on the swings and then have lunch or dinner at an Italian joint which is on the right after you cross the bridge - don't know the name but they have a parking lot and never in my life would I order shrimp parm - but actually liked it a lot? Best wishes as you both begin the healing process. S |
S -- I think you are talking about City Island, not Ocean City. City Island is actually in the northern most part of the Bronx, just before Westchester begins. And yes, Bronxville is a quaint village and fun to stroll.

Muchos mahalos db! City Island it must be. Would not go summertime so much, but offseason it has a great ocean honkey tonk feel and makes a nice lunch date and drive.
Yes, I need to visit Mama in Bville soon. And see how they are presenting Autumn. The shopkeepers do their best to keep every season gorgeous. |
For one of the BEST American fare in the Tri-Stae area, then try for a table at The Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Pocantino Hills.
The only caveat is the 30-day advanced reservation, but even if you can only go for the weekend brunch tastings menu, it would be worth the drive from wherever you are. http://bluehillstonebarns.com/ |
Thank you to all who responded to my question and for all of your kind thoughts and condolences. Fodorites ARE the nicest people in the world!
