Nosh is just down the road on Erwin and has great food and casual atmosphere. Foster's Market on 15/501 is another great option - always good. For a nicer dinner - Spartacus on 15/501. Downtown Durham - I recommend Mt Fuji, Fishmongers, Parker and Otis, and Elmo's.

Few places are within easy walking distance although new ones are popping up along Erwin Rd. west of 'Duke North' all the time. Haven't tried Nosh, but that's just one.
Not much further but requiring a drive is Parizade (2200 West Main Street, in the tall tower visible across the Durham Fwy), Italian-ish, is good but not sure service will be quick enough. At virtually the same entrance is Verde (name may have changed, same place, though) - less formal, often quicker, good small plates. Haven't tried Baba Ghannouj in same area. Dir: Right on Erwin, left on Anderson, right on Main.
If you continue on Erwin you'll get to the 9th St. corridor/neighborhood: my two favorites are the Blue Corn Cafe and, further down, Elmo's diner - both casual, good food from mostly local sources. For slightly less casual, the Vin Rouge (across from Elmo's) is a good French bistro.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Cyanna and suewoo, thank you for the concern. DH has been suffering from an untreatable condition for a while and we have found some hope at Duke. Fingers crossed the new protocol works.
