"Resort Wear" means?
 

Can someone please explain what "resort wear" means?

I need to get reservations at a few restaurants on the Big Island, and I'm a little confused as to what resort wear actually means.

I don't want to be either underdressed or overdressed. So what should dh and I wear to dinner when resort wear is required? Thanks for your help.

I typed in "resort wear definition" on Google and I got a website that says the following:

Resort Attire

This means good quality summer attire that you would feel comfortable wearing to a golf club or country club. This could include good quality shorts, button and polo shirts, short skirts, sandals, and newish sneakers—no flip-flops, tank tops, t-shirts, or too much skin.

Shirts with collars, no butt cheeks hanging out...

Oh, also... I would also add that (in general) there could be restaurants you would go to in the evening for dinner where you would want to wear slacks... not shorts (no matter how long, how nice, etc. the shorts were). But, of course, calling the specific restaurant in question would give you that answer. This is usually not the case for restaurants in Hawaii... but I would still call.

For men think Tommy Bahamas. For women a skirt and top or nice cool pants and top, linen is always nice and a nice pair of sandals, flat or heels, whichever you are most comfortable in.

it means:
no cut off jeans
no t-shirts with offensive or promotional stamps on.
no dirty sneakers
no baseball hats
no bathing suits beside beach and pool area

It means:

nice summer,cool, 100% cotton clothes. sarongs go a long way for ladies, a colorful one with a nice blouse will dress you for evening wear. guys in kakis and nice polo shirts, loafers with no socks, look casual and elegant

Sundress, strappy sandals, light wrap for ladies? Chino pants and nice plain or subtle print shirt with collar for men?

Suze: regarding the strappy sandals - I really wanted to pack them, but was wondering if maybe I would be bringing too much. I probably am, but now at least I feel a little validated.

I've seen some people on vacation who wore outfits that looked more like "last resort" wear. #-O

Traditionally it is an extra collection for the designers. It is summer clothes in the middle of winter.

Years ago when only the rich took winter vacations, it was impossible for them to find new summer clothes in the middle of winter.

Therefore, there was a demand for designers to make an extra collection with warm weather clothes that would debut around Thanksgiving.

It also means anything by Tommy Bahama or Lilly Pullitzer.

Interesting thread. Living in Florida, you've pretty well described by entire wardrobe. But I keep one end of the closet for my own "resort" wear. They're the things that some day I'll resort to wearing.

Good one Patrick! WE are going out to Sage Cafe tonight and I am making DH wear long pants....that is dressing up to him! I noticed in a lot of restaurants here, locals(I assume) seem to prefer long pants for dinner. I wear capris and slides most of the time anyhow.

To those who have their wooo haaa's exposed: beware of sunburns! Swelled bright red may be not the best color for you.

Also keep in mind: sunblock makes your wooo haaa's shiny. Sun reflection may distruct the local drivers.

Lot's of definitions.

For me, a collared shirt (golf or aloha shirt, but NOT a long sleeve shirt). Nice pair of shorts at least. Pants are ok, but not really necessary. Loafers or sandals or even a pair of flip flops.

Kal: That HAD to be on Kaui! After all the bad press you've given the island, the quality of visitors must now be alittle worse for the wear! Ha!

FainaAgain: ...Swelled bright red in that area sounds like it would be require Preparation H instead of sunscreen! Whoooo
