If you're up where the Four Seasons is in Scottsdale, it definitely doesn't feel like suburbia. I took a picture from the adult pool, which has a great view of a canyon, and it turned out great! Another great thing about the Four Seasons is the cabanas which are free!

The shopping at the mall in Scottsdale which is downtown is great! Plus, you can go around the outdoor quaint shops too. I think Scottsdale would be great!

sarge and mah - thanks for the reassurances on Scottsdale. It's been so long since I visited. But Sarge, honestly, I could have done without the coyote reference.

I actually asked my husband what he thought about Scottsdale last night as I got him a room at the Intercontinental Monteleone last week during a business trip (on hotwire for $160). He absolutely loved it.

One final thought I had was to pick an airport like SAN or LAX or SNA and pick a few places to stay - one inland, one on the beach, one in a city. Make sure they have cancellation policies. And then let her decide. I really need to stop obsessing and start doing.

Sheri, by the way, we were in Vegas together (with husbands) about two years ago. I'd like to take her somewhere new.

Thanks again!
H

Look into Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, Alabama. It's affordable, beautiful, and there are actually "girlfriend getaway" packages you can get that are fun. You can look into the packages and other deals here: www.thebeachiscalling.org.

You would need a car, not only to get from the Airport but also to get around the Island which is kind of split up. The Resorts are on one end, the old town another & the Fort & best beach area a bit in between. If you choose to opt for massages & such, go here - www.domehealingcenter.com, don't pay the high prices at the Ritz. The Old Town also tends to have the best restaurants + you can take a Sunset Cruise from there, etc.

Just an addtional thought to add to your overthinking : If you come to California and don't see the coast, you might as well be in Arizona. I don't mean this to be snarky or downplay the non-coastal areas of CA in any way. I just think, given your circumstances --the brevity of the trip, the flight options and the 5* resorts at bargain prices-- that Scottsdale might work better for you.

I'm sure you will have a great time whatever you choose.

Okay, I bit the bullet.

I truly believe that what she'd most appreciate is a lovely resort. With that in mind, I purchaed our air travel to PHX.

It's hard to argue with travel times like these: Leave OKC at noon and land in PHX at 1:45. (sadly not the nonstop - it was too early) But it's Southwest, so if it works out that we could leave at 8 AM, we can always change it.

On the return, we leave PHX at 5pm and land before 9pm. This one is nonstop. Tough to beat.

Now, for a resort....

I truly want to thank all of you for all of your very thoughtful contributions. You were a major help.

So....any ideas on ways to 'wrap' this gift? A book about Scottsdale? A tiny toy plane? A framed photo of the resort?
This may be a topic for the lounge.

Thanks again,
H

PS I'll post back after her birthday with her reaction. I can't wait!

A cactus garden?
Cactus margarita glasses with prickly pear margarita mix?

Have a great time!

Just an FYI, it's the Intercontinental Montelucia in Scottsdale. The Monteleone is a hotel in New Orleans!
