gailw: good luck to him and hope the rain holds off. Will be interested to know how he made out!

hawksbill May 5th, 2011 09:15 PM

Gailw, I think that's the best plan of all. I apologize for my earlier directions about exiting directly from Storrow onto Beacon Street in Boston, rather than via Charlesgate West near Kenmore. The latter really is a better option. It should all go fine. Good luck, and Go Sox!

The easiest way to do this (yk is pretty much on target otherwise) would be to leave the car in the parking garage at North Station/Boston Garden and take the Green Line to Fenway or Kenmore Square or St Mary's and arrange to meet the friend somewhere near there.

This would be especially good for people who want to park beyond the metered areas and don't have a friend with a driveway. Brookline has two hour limits at non-metered spaces, and they are rigorously enforced to discourage game or concert parking, commuter parking, and (I'm shocked, shocked!) to raise revenue.

We have a pied a terre on Marion Street in Coolidge Corner, and we see people getting tickets frequently.

Update bottom line: he made it.
Details: He got as far as the North Station/Storrow Drive sign before traffic came to a complete halt. A graduation had shut down one lane of STorrow Drive and there was also an accident of some kind. For future reference, Buckminster Hotel should be on your left if you want to stay on Beacon St but in any case when he passed Fenway Park, he knew he was on the wrong street and called friend who directed him to Amory without difficulty. In any case, he called me at 10 of 1 from Fenway Park, so they made it to the game (which had a one and a half rain delay, even though it only sprinkled for a minutes up here in NH). He said it was a good game and the Sox won, so I guess that justifies all efforts.
Again, my thanks to all who contributed suggestions/directions.

Glad it worked out. I was at the game too and had a lot of fun. The 2 hour rain delay wasn't but gave us time to walk around.

Forgot about commencements making an even bigger mess of things - I should have thought of that. I think Northeastern was this weekend. But glad it worked out in the end and thanks for reporting back.

Argh, I was right the first time about the Buckminster! Sorry about that.

Glad it eventually worked out. These days, if the Sox win, it's a small miracle to be thankful for.

Oh gosh, gailw, I'm so sorry! I go to Kenmore Sq at least once a month but I guess I'm still confused. LOL. I should have double-checked google streetview regarding Buckminster's position before posting my directions. Hawksbill, my apologies as well.

Traffic will be even worse over the next few weeks as more and more commencements are taking place...

hey guys, don't feel bad -- he knew he was wrong as soon as he saw Fenway, pulled over, got quick and easy instructions to get to Amory St. from there.
tchoiniere: he said the same thing about the rain delay, that they just went somewhere to talk, so that worked out okay, too.
SO wore his famous black shirt with pink flamingos to the game and I attribute the Sox change of luck to that shirt. Maybe we should all make him keep wearing that shirt for the rest of the summer --- ?

yk is right about the extra traffic in May this year...its seemed particularly bad to me too. As someone who drives in to the Red Sox games about once a week, I really look forward to about mid June...when the students and their parents and visitors have all gone home. Weekends, in particular, become much MUCH easier.

cw May 9th, 2011 10:57 AM

Oh geez--so sorry about the mix-up. Apologies to gailw and hawksbill. And I go that way a few times a week. Doh.

hawksbill May 9th, 2011 12:24 PM

Hey, if the black shirt with pink flamingos works, I'll buy one too! Things could start looking a little weird in the stands by the end of the season.

'Hey, if the black shirt with pink flamingos works, I'll buy one too."

Whatever it takes . . . we could test it out, then sell them outside the park.

gailw May 10th, 2011 12:14 PM

I love the mental image of hundreds of black shirts with pink flamingos. Go for it, guys!
