Renting Portable DVD Player

I'll be travelling with my husband and a 3-year-old for an 18-hour drive. We're thinking of renting a portable dvd player to keep her occupied (she's very antsy on car rides, we've tried taking her before). Has anyone done this who is willing to share their experience with me? Where did you rent from, how did it go? Thanks

When we got our new car, we got the DVD player installed. We take lots of long trips to visit family. It has helped tremendously with our 3 year-old. Even stuck in traffic, we don't hear any crying.
That said, I don't think they're inexpensive to rent. I've seen lots of portable VHS players at places like Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Good Guys, etc. for around $200.00. That may be a better investment. Also, if your family is like ours, you probably have more kids VHS tapes, then DVD's so you can bring her favorite videos. Good luck.

Laney,

I checked about a month ago with two reputable online DVD rental sources (survivethedrive.com and another one whose name I've forgotten) for a rental in late August, and none were available. The DVD rental was approximately $200 for a 7 day rental. I've since investigated the purchase of a small TV/VCR combination for our vehicle-they're only about $150.

P.S. Ignore all the folks who will criticize you, as they did me when I posted a similar question, about how your children should be happy playing "road games" like they did in the good old days, and that they don't need to watch movies.

Laney,

We had the same situation last year and we purchased a 9" TV/VCR combo at circuit city for about $180. It came with the cig. lighter adapter for the car. This was a godsend for our three year old. It was also nice to have in hotel rooms to play her tapes as well. It was definitely worth the money and made the trip much more enjoyable for both her and me.

I might consider buying something - I am sure you will find ways to use it with a 3 year old who gets bored in the car (so do I, but as the driver, I can't watch movies)

If anyone gives you grief, refer them to post from about a week ago about unpleasant childhood car vacation memories. It should refresh their minds

I didn't realize one could be purchased for under $200. We definitely have more VHS tapes, so it probably would make sense to have a VHS player. Thank you!
