Renting cars - One way direction.

Has anyone had good experiences with any special car rental company when renting a car (example): Pick up at Miami Airport and drop off at Ft. Lauderdale Airport.

Most major car rental companies do not have one-way drop off fees within the major cities....try Dollar.

In Florida....

Alamo do not have one way fees in Florida plus you can check in with their Kiosks. Here are a couple of coupons I have used:

AD3829MRB - $25 off weekly

AD395OL2VN - $15 off weekends

I have used Thrifty for one-way rentals (between Orlando & Miami and vice versa) with good results and fair prices.

For added clarity:

Lots of companies don't have "one-way dropoff FEES", but the amounts they charge on a per-day rental are usually much greater per-day than their return-at-same-office counterparts.

If going on a lengthy trip, with a one-way rental, it is wise to scurry from the origin to the destination, and turn in the car there, to begin a brand new rental for the duration of your trip.

For your situation, do price comparison, and then consider doing exactly what I mentioned if the cost savings warrants it.

Last week, we rented a car from Advantage at San Diego's airport and returned it at Los Angeles' LAX.

We paid a good rate of $26/day for a full-sized car, with a $35 drop off fee at LAX.

We thought that was a good deal.

So far as I know, none of the major agencies charge a drop off fee in Florida -- unlike many other states. I've certainly never paid one and I've done a lot of one way rentals in Florida. Mainly I'm renting between Naples and Miami or Naples and Ft. Lauderdale. Generally Dollar has the best rates I've found, but once got a better rate with National. Avis and Hertz invariably are priced way higher unless you have a super corporate rate with them. The piddly AAA discount doesn't bring them down anywhere near the other major ones.

Another way to reduce (if not eliminate) drop-off fees. During certain times of the year, car rental companies want to move cars to (or from) Florida (and, sometimes, Arizona) in order to match demand. You can thus rent a car between Florida and places north of there at a very favorable rate. Generally, they want to move cars into Florida just before winter; and out of Florida just after winter.
