Renting camper van/ motor home
 

We want to rent a camper van/ motor home for 3 people for 3 weeks beginning June 27th 2017 starting from Boston and returning there.
Anyone know a reliable firm not too expensive p!lease? Thanks

If you are looking to save $ an RV rental is not the way to go. Very expensive. Call Cruise America and tell them what you want. Ask for all fees mileage etc to be included in quote.

You can check prices on the Cruise America website. I was curious so I did - a compact vehicle sleeping 3 at most would be $3,339 plus mileage ($735 for an estimated 2100 miles) plus state tax ($239), so close to $4500.

<i>so close to $4500</i> and counting as one needs to add fuel costs and RV park or campground fees for the overnight stops.

Have you driven in Boston before?

I ask only because no way would I want to try to drive an RV out of Boston proper!! I would look to areas in other parts of the state (Western Mass or even into NH or VT) and do the rental starting from there.

Where are you planning to tour - What is your specific itinerary? Because just renting a car and staying in hotels/motels will be easier and would probably be cheaper.

IMO this is overstated. And I doubt that RV's would be garaged in the middle of the city. Our rental car--not RV--was, and getting out of the city at an off-peak time wasn't bad at all, main arteries all the way to the Interstate.

Thanks for all the replies. I have driven out of Boston before in a rental car but many years ago. We are heading for Maine. Maybe a car and motels might be a cheaper option?

Consider flying into Manchester NH or Portland ME and renting the RV there if you are planning on a trip to Maine.

A car and motels is likely to be much cheaper. And depending on when you go the campgrounds can be filled up months in advance - never mind expensive.

We have so many times considered renting an RV for various trips. It looks like such fun. But then reality hits. First, cost. As said above, after factoring in insurance, tax, mileage, gas and paying for a place to park it - it was always cheaper to stay in a lower end hotels.

And while it might be convenient to be able to prepare meals in the RV, remember you have to haul it everywhere you go - from going to the beach to buying a loaf of bread.

You might get some off season rates on your lodging in late June. We have traveled around New England pulling a camper but Maine campsites are getting expensive and we no longer have the camper. We drive around daily but the camper could be left in place. You can boondoggle for a few days (not using hookups) but hooking up sewer and dumping is not fun. Also parking in places like Boothbay Harbor is difficult. There are going to be times when you will want to just pull over.

I suggest finding a good base location for your stay, perhaps splitting a week into two parts. Southern Maine while rates are cheaper if you want to explore that area. We prefer mid-coast Maine and usually don't get off I95 until Brunswick. Love Portland, however. On our visit last June I found a groupon deal for an East Boothbay hotel. Not the greatest place but a bargain. We were able to get a couple of nights at a tiny cottage further north. Very rustic but right on the water and 2 bedrooms.

You might also try airb&b for 2 bedrooms apartments. We like to be able to cook our own breakfasts.
