Renting a boat near Islamorada - any suggestions on where to go/what to see?

We'd like to rent a boat in Islamorada, as we've done when we stay on Sanibel, and I'm hoping to get some ideas of ways to enjoy the half (?) or full (?) day. Are there beaches to stop at? Destinations? We'll have a Boston Whaler or a small deckboat (2 people).
Thanks for your help!

The Islamorada Fish Company is a great place to pull in for lunch.

On the oceanside from the Holiday Isle hotel-as you are going East out the channel-pull over on the Sandbar.

That is a good beach and crowded on weekends.

PS make sure the anchor is really imbedded-I have seen boats drift off-fun watching them catch it.

Hire a skipper to show you around for a couple of hours.

If you aren't familiar with channel markers or if you don't know how to read a chart, don't do it.

Fines are stiff in the Florida Keys. The waters are heavily patroled and the fine is $50 per square foot if you dig up seagrass.

Stay out of the backcountry (hence Islamorada Fish Company).

If you feel comfortable, check out Bud and Marys.

Boating in the keys is not for the faint of heart.

There's some easy snorkelling north of Indian Key (by Robbie's Marina). It's not the reef but very accessible. As Maryann noted, the sandbar at Holiday Isle is fun. The back country is great for a picnic, pull up near a key and float - ask at the Marina for ideas.
