Rental Vehicles on Hawaii Bi and Maui

Hello and happy summer!!!
We are traveling with 4 adults and 3 kids in August to the BI of Hawaii and Maui. We are renting a vehicle in both locations. Question - am I crazy to get a minivan - it would comfortably seat 7!! I am having a tough time finding a 7 seater SUV to rent. Or we could rent 2 cars - but that wouldn't be as much fun as we plan on doing a lot of exploring!
We plan on driving the road to Hana and to VNP.
Thanks!!!

We rented a minivan a couple months ago in Maui. It was very functional and very ugly.

I wouldn't want to drive the road to Hana in a mid-size, let alone a minivan. Minivan on BI would probably be fine, if you kept to major roads, but "exploring" Maui involves lots of twisty-turny narrow roads.

We did the Road to Hana; it was fine in the minivan. A convertible would've been a lot more fun, though.

Ditto

Sometimes being pratical just kinda bites but otherwise somebody is stuck with three kids.
You can take shifts driving so everyone gets to enjoy the scenery be aware also that some locals on the road to Hana may come up quickly and there areas you pull over to let them by.

I haven't given up on the 7 seater SUV, but it seems that both the minivan and the SUV would be the same to deal with, right?? Hard to navigate tight corners, etc. Not fun on the twisty turnies.
