rental cottage in Kauai

Planning our first trip to Kauai this summer and looking for rental (for 2) on the north shore. Trying to decide between Hale Walea and Hale O Lalani. Not many photos on Hale Walea on the web so it is hard to get a sense of the place other than location on a great beach. Hale O Lalani isn't on the beach but looks very nice and private. Any feedback on either of these places -- or other recommendations for a romantic cottage on the north shore would be greatly appreciated.

Last summer we went to the Big Island and stayed in an outstanding rental - House of Merriment in the Kealakekua area. Anyone interested in more info let me know. Highly recommended!

Hi cm318. We rented a beach house in Anini for next summer, but were seriously looking at Hale Walea before our decision. Contact the rental agent at kauai-vacation.com and they can provide you with more photos of the cottage. I understand it's a very popular rental. Also, do a search under Kauai vacation rentals or Kauai cottages. There has been information posted on this by other posters. Happy searching!

Hi cm318. What price range are you looking in? Take a look at vrbo.com, if you haven't already, for vacation rentals by owner. There are a ton of excellent places on the north shore listed.

When I had a problem with my rental, the following sites were recommended as well:

http://www.napaliprop.com
http://kauai-vacation-rentals.com/
http://www.grantham-resorts.com/

Hi - thanks for the replies -- I have been researching for weeks and have checked & rechecked the web sites you noted (I'm another complusive vacation planner -- I think this forum may serve as a support group for this type complusive behavior :-)

We'd like to stay in the $250-300 per night range. We'd like someplace with real "aloha spirit" (a bit upscale with a funky edge - how do you like that as a description) - wood floors, high ceilings, nice lanai, large windows, some privacy -- a water view would be a plus but not totally essential. Hey -- we live in Tucson -- we're looking to see as much "green" as possible on vacation!! I'm sure we'll love the lush vegetation on the north shore.

I'm hesitant to rent someplace without seeing photos of most rooms (especially the bedroom) -- some time ago I called and inquired about additional interior photos of Hale Walea and was told none were available -- but maybe they've gotten some recently. They did say that the owner uses the property frequently which I take as a good sign -- if they stay there I suspect that it is well maintained.

Great photos of Hale O Lanai on the web but would like to hear from someone who has stayed there or is familiar with the location.

I'm open to any and all suggestions -- it will continue to feed my vacation research obsession. I'm sure I haven't checked all the options! Thanks in advance!

Halea Walea is located on Makua Beach, past Hanalei & Ha`ena. Very nice location, especially for beachgoers and snorkelers.

From the photos of Hale O Lalani, and the description given on assorted websites (use google.com and you'll get lots of links to that property), it appears to be in Kalihiwai -- but I can't tell if it's on the makai (ocean) or mauka (mountain) side of our highway. Either way, you'll have distant views to the ocean and lots of tropical foliage around the property.
