Rental car sites

I have looked at rentalcars.com, Alamo and priceline.com for car rentals in ANC RT in July. You only get one shot to bid a price on a car with priceline and must wait 7 days to bid again on the same type of car. I wanted a full size car for our needs and do not want to go any lower than that. I choose not to wait 7 days to book a car. On the other hand it will cost me about $900 for a 20% discount on Alamo for a full size car for 12 days. That sounds high to me. Is it? Rentalcars.com gives the same price as Alamo as far as I am concerned. Is there a better website for rentals for 12 days or should I take the $900 deal and run with it? Thanks.

have you check hotwire.com? I have reserved a minivan in NH in July from them. They tell you the price including taxes but they don't tell you the rental company until after you pay. I decided that since they only used nationally known brands such as Hertz, Avis and Budget I would take a chance. Their price for the minivan was $250 less than the next cheapest price I could find. After I paid by credit card, I found out that the rental is through Hertz.

Now this isn't a ringing endorsement of Hotwire because I haven't actually picked up the car yet. But I have confirmed with Hertz that they have the reservation at the price quoted so I'm feeling pretty good about it. I did book a hotel once through Hotwire and had no problem.

Be careful with Hotwire, I was recently able to get a luxury car in Hawaii for $29/day, and Hotwire was showing $52/day. Check out biddingfortravel.com for recent winning bids for your car type. If you have access to another computer you can bid on PL immediately, you just need to use a different cc.

I have no idea what "ANC RT" means, but have you checked the other large national brand car rental places? Why just Alamo? One of them might be having a special for your location/dates. Sign up for their email notifications and you may receive a special offer as well. You could always book the $900 rate now if it's cancellable and cancel it if you find something better. But for $75/day I'd keep looking.

Also check www.travelzoo.com to see if they show any car rental specials that would be useful to you.

Send an email to [email protected] will find a better rate for you than that. Only once in about ten times have they not found me something lower.

The $900 for the 12 days includes taxes and fees which is approximately $100 per $300 base price. Yes, I did the hotwire.com and nothing was available for my dates in every car category. But I will try the bidding for travel, travelzoo and clubjefftravel@hotmail next. Thanks.

Oh, by the way, ANC is Anchorage and RT is round trip. I used to work for the airlines and that was the form used.

You might also want to try rentalcodes.com.
We tried all of the usual...Orbitz, Travelocity, etc. plus anything we belong to such as AAA. Sam's Club.
In our case, we found the best deal at the rentalcode site; we rented from National for $822 for 2 weeks. Then a week later at the same site, I found the same size car from National for $719, so I cancelled the first one.
The deal I currently have can be cancelled too. So now at least I have a car, but I'm going to keep shopping around right up until the last minute. We had been hoping to rent a car for 2 weeks for $500 total, maybe I was just dreaming but I'm not giving up yet.
We will be there in July also!
Good luck

Kitti
Forgot to mention, the prices I quoted are for a mid-size car.
Can't go any smaller, too uncomfortable for my husband.

There is Thrifty, Payless, Dollar, National etc in the Anchorage airport. Also consider independents. But most close by 6pm. There aren't any deals in Anchorage now with Priceline, so I suggest you book the cheapest you can get now that you can cancel and try priceline a couple weeks before you go.

You can do a lot better than $900 I think.

You might want to check out U-Save. We reserved a full-size car for 9 days for $380 including taxes/fees (the next cheapest when we booked was Payless at $520). They're off the airport but send a shuttle, and they're open to 8, at least on a Friday night. Good luck.

Alaska car rentals are twice what I have seen anywhere - but makes sense. The car rental period is really May-Sept and then the cars sit around or have to be transported to some other rental location - which is not easy from Alaska. This is not the first Alaska sticker-shock you will experience.
