Rental Car or Shuttle to Breckenridge
 

We will be going to Breckenridge in March. Our flight does not arrive in Denver until 7:00 PM. My husband is a little nervous about driving on the mountain roads after dark. What are the roads like from Denver to Breck. Should we just get a shuttle instead? Thanks for your help.

You'll be on Interstate 70 right up to the turn for Breckenridge, then a few miles of paved highway. It's not really "mountain" driving, although there are some very long slopes. Depends on the weather and what you're used to! (A shuttle might be better if you are already nervous and unfamiliar with a longish ride.)

The ride to Breckinridge is very easy and should take you about 1 1/2 hours from the airport, door to door. The roads are always kept very clear, except of course, during a snow storm, but it truly highway driving most of the way. Once off the interstate it is still a straight shot to the slopes of Breckinridge. My only suggestion is that you request some type of 4-wheel drive vehicle or SUV. Then you will be in great shape. If the weather is really bad, you would be much better off in your SUV than in a shuttle. Also,if a bad storm hits, you might as well stay overnight in Denver and then head up in the morning. I think it is always nice to have a car should you want to drive to a restaurant, drive over to Keystone or up to Vail for a day, etc. I am a transplanted Californian and if I can handle the drive, anyone can! We have TONS of snow, so you will have a great time!

We just returned last night from Breckenridge and as always used the Colorado Mountain Express shuttle. With drop offs and pit stops count on a solid 2 hour trip to / from the airport. When we arrived on Monday parts of I-70 and the road leading to Breck were covered in snow--there were only two lanes visible on 70 where normally there are three. Yesterday, the roads were completely clear and dry. We prefer the shuttle not needing transportation once we arrive in Breck and having not driven on snow in many years.

What the previous posters have said is accurate, about the drive from the airport to Breck being pretty much a straight shot west onI-70. Most of the time the highway is clear and snow-free - it's an important trucker's and skiiers route, so the snowplows are very diligent. When it does snow, however, the road does get snow-covered while it's snowing.

While parts of the highway are somewhat curvey, the road is good, and there will be enough traffic on the road at 7 pm to help guide your way (if your husband is nervous about driving, then you should do the driving). On the other hand, if you don't think you'll need a car once you're in Breckenridge, then take a shuttle - they're convenient and efficient.

Depends completely on the weather. If you have any concerns take a shuttle and you can rent a car in Summit Co. if you want one when you get here. www.ridecme.com to reserve online. Enter "onhold" in the discount box for a discount. Or take the shuttle to the Frisco transfer station for only $34 and rent a car from Enterprise at the hotel next door. Must be reserved online at least 24 hrs. in advance for that rate.

We just returned from that area also. The drive from Breck to DIA is an easy 2 hours. If you may want to ski at any other area (Keystone, Copper, Vail, etc.) you will want a car. If you want to do any shopping, you will want a car. It always seems when we leave the mountains it is in a storm. But it has never made any difference. They REALLY maintain the traffic flow.
