Rental car companies

Which car company do u like the most & have had the least problems with?

We've used Dollar and Alamo and have had no problems with either. We're using Alamo again this year, mainly because it's slightly cheaper.

I have been traveling for business and pleasure now for maybe 30 years. For the majority of those years I have always used the big three Hertz, Avis and National.
I have affinity memberships with all three.
Lately, though I have switched to Enterprise and have frequently used off airport locations to free myself of the high fees often associated with airport locations.
In all the years I have had very few problems with any of these companies.

Hertz is my fav - never had problems and never had to stand in line. Staff is very professional and courteous.

If price is equal I always use Hertz - gold club member I just look for my name on the board, find my car and go.

Avis is never the cheapest, so I never use them.

Dollar has great prices where I travel, and I have never had a problem with them in 10-15+ rentals.

Alamo I avoid. Often long lines, esp at tourist destinations.

I don't like payless & enterprise - the car checkout process seems to take too long with them.

My experience is the same as joethekay. In 35 years of business travel, I use Hertz 95% of the time. However, they have recently been exceptionally expensive at some destinations. My alternative has been Enterprise. Always better prices (sometimes 50%). Most of the time they offer an upgrade for a reasonable price.

If you are not a Hertz Gold customer, you miss most of the advantage of using Hertz. Walk up to the car and drive away.

Most car rental companies offer a "preferred" customer sort of club which is worth joining even if you only use them once. Like stumpwork mentions, with most of those clubs you avoid the check in lines, and often have your car waiting for you with little or NO paperwork. It's a worthwhile thing to join.

I realize that many corporations have great deals with Hertz, but as an individual I've never found a rate (AAA for example) that even begins to compare savings wise with Dollar, which is the company I've been using about 90% of the time -- based on great service and the BEST prices I could find.
