Rental bikes to cross Golden Gate Bridge

My kids age 20 & 17 want to take the commuter train to San Francisco, walk to Fishermans Wharf and somehow rent bikes to cross GG bridge and explore across the bay. Any tips where they can rent bikes? Is the bike path separated from traffic for most of the way? is it possible to rent bikes one way and return to SF by ferry boat?

>>is it possible to rent bikes one way and return to SF by ferry boat?<<

No, you ride one way . . . and then take the bike on the ferry the other way

There are several rental companies near the Wharf -- this is just one

Or -- Better yet, this one is near the CalTrain station so they could ride to the wharf, across the bridge and ferry back to the ferry bldg and rid back to the hut.

OR they can rent at the Hut - take the ferry to Sausalito, ride back to SF, the Wharf and back to the Hut.

That should say >> . . . ferry back to the ferry bldg and ride back to the hut.<<

If they do decide to rent from the Bike Hut, just know that the ride to the bridge from there is in traffic --lots of people do it daily, and there's a supposed bike lane, but it's not separated from traffic until you get to the Wharf. Once at the Wharf, and on the bridge itself, you are separated from the cars.

On our last trip we rented bikes from Blazing Saddles Hyde Street location, went across the bridge then on to Tiburon then took the ferry back (with our bikes). There are sections between the bridge and then through Sausalito then again between the end of the Bay and Tiburon where you are riding on roads with traffic. Not a big deal if you are used to it though. Highly recommend it and ferry ride back from Tiburon an added scenic bonus.

I did a search and this post came up. DH and I both in our 60's are thinking about biking the Golden Gate bridge to Sausalito when we visit end of May this year. We will be doing some biking before we go as training!!! Is there a separate bike trail the whole way. I know a few years ago you were biking amongst traffic in a couple of places, but think I read where there is a new way to go to Sausalito when it is just bikes and pedestrians. Anyone done this ride recently. All tips appreciated.

Except for a short section close to Fisherman's wharf you will be riding on a dedicated bike/walking path the whole way, and even in that part you have a bike lane in the road. The section from the bridge down to Sausalito is on a shared road but very little traffic and downhill all the way.

The town of Sausalito has an attended bike parking lot right near the ferry. Due to the volume of bikes they have restricted locking up bikes around town and want you to use this lot. Well worth the small change.

Note. I believe that on weekends, bicyclists are required to ride on the ocean side of the Golden Gate Bridge. On week days, they can ride on either side - but I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone ride on the ocean side then.

Do the locals actually do this ride, or is it predominantly something that tourists do?

Going Golden Gate Bridge in Biking is really very nice experience for me.

My wife & I never did this ride while we lived in San Francisco with bikes. We mostly used our bikes in Golden Gate Park. In the 43 years we've lived in the Bay Area, I would guess that 90-100% of the bicycles I've seen going through Crissy Field & up & over the bridge have been rental bikes. I don't know the origin of the person riding the bike.

I didn’t even WALK across the GGB the first 35 years I lived here. I’ve since both walked it and ridden my bike across it.

Do you have your own bike, or did you rent one for the ride over the bridge??

I usually record the game & watch it the next day. After I read the score this morning - I immediately deleted the recording.
