rent a cabin in a Koa camping NM and NV
 

We (a European family of 4) would like to make a tour in New Mexico, Utah, Arizona and Nevada. Did anybody of you have experiences with renting a cabin on a Koa comping, Especially in Albuquerque NM and Grand Canyon NV?

I've never stayed in a KOA camping cabin but I've seen them. Do you realize that you have to bring your own bedding? Bathrooms and showers are in a separate building?

My son was going to stay in KOA Cabins but found that he could get cheap rooms at places like Super 8 motel and that included bedding and a private bathroom for almost the same price and sometimes cheaper than the KOA Camping Cabins.

Another thing I want to warn you about the Grand Canyon KOA. The closest KOA to the Grand Canyon is 55 miles away. That means driving a little over an hour to get to and from the campground. If you are bringing your own bedding then I would recommend buying a cheap tent and camping in the park. You will need to make reservations to stay in the Mather Campground.

I"m sure there are some nice KOAs but most campers don't regard them very highly. They are not like staying in a "campground" at all.

The Europeans have us beat with shelters in campgrounds to rent. You won't find much of that here, I'm afraid.

I agaree with Utahtea. You can stay in a decent motel for close to the same money and be a lot more comfortable.

Have you thought about renting an RV?

Thanks Utahtea and Connie. I agree that's not like camping at all, but we don't want to drag too much gear on the plane and as we like camping...I thought is was a good alternative. It was just an idea we had. I searched the site of the super 8 motels and the rooms are nice, of course better than a cabin, but there is nothing to see neither to do (swimming pool etc.) Our boys (18 and 15) would be bored stiff, especially while we would like to stay more than one night on the same place.
Ok for the Koa near the G.C. Thanks for the tip Utahtea, we'll search for something else.

I'd encourage you to check into renting an RV. They come fully stocked with bedding and kitchen and bathrrom equipment and you still get that camping experience.

We usually tent camp but rented an RV for our trip to Alaska and loved the whole experience.

Another thought about camping is to buy cheap equipment after you get here and either ship it home or give it away when you go home.

Connie, I've already thought about an RV, but somebody told me they get very poor fuel economy and because distances are so large in the Southwest...

When we rented an RV out of Las Vegas they charged extra for the bedding so we brought our own.

Gas mileage in an RV will run between 7 and 10 M.P.G. and they are NOT cheap to rent!

As long as you realize what you are getting into then maybe the KOA camping cabins would work for you. You could probably pick up some really cheap bedding at a Wal-Mart, K-Mart or Target store.
