Reno what are the top things to do

My husband is going to Reno for 4 days for a convention. I am considering going but I can't find very many things/attractions on the internet. Everything keeps popping me over to Tahoe. We won't be there long enough to drive back and forth to Tahoe. Also, I won't have a car.

I would like to here your favorite things to do in Reno. Thanks for your help.

P.S. Is the Ponderosa Ranch a fun or interesting activity?

I'd take an afternoon and drive over to Virginia City, where the Nevada silver fortunes were made. Sure it's touristy and schmaltzy, but it's fun, there's some nice scenery and the fresh air will feel good after Reno.

Haven't seen the capitol in Carson City, but it's something else you may not have thought of.
I was under the impression that Joe's comment above was about all there was to do in Reno. I live in N.O. (also close to the Gulf Coast casinoes) so gambling and smoke and food isn't anything new or adventurous to me. I'd hate to spend all that money to go to Reno to find out that I will be doing the same things I could do at home.

Anyone else know of other things to do besides gamble, drink, smoke and eat?

In six words: Reno is the pits. Stay home!(Anonymous for fear of being spammed by the city of Reno.)

We were just in Reno a few weeks ago...on our way to Tahoe. We spent two nights there at Circus Circus. The town did not appeal to us, since we are not gamblers, and there is little else to do. You might check to see what shows are in town and there are a couple of malls. If I were you, I would rent a car and drive the short distance to Tahoe. If you want to see the Ponderosa Ranch, you'll have to go to N. Lake Tahoe anyway. It's in Incline.

Julie: my not so subtle point was that there's not a whole lot that's charming about Reno. It's casinos, strip malls, cheap eateries and track home developments.
Now Tahoe, on the other hand, is beautiful and well worth a trip. Reno is just Biloxi with a mountain backdrop.
Sorry to be pessimistic. My in laws live in Reno and I hate going there (and I like my in laws).

Thanks for the help, I think I will skip this convention and use the money when we go on the next one....
