Reno Nevada Lodging?

Hola! The best rate we've found for 7 nights (12/26-1/2)is at the Sands Regency. Is it because it is sub-par?

Any other suggestions for basically sleeping and breakfast 2 adults and our 6 yr. old child?

Or, is there a particularly DAZZLING Hotel/Motel we must stay at?

No gambling, just Skiing in Lake Tahoe (well, maybe a slot or two...).

Gracias!

If your plans are skiing, I wouldn't stay in Reno. You're going to do an 1+ drive to get to the slopes each day (and may not make it at all if the weather is bad). It's a go 60 mile drive from Reno to Heavenly, 80 miles to Kirkwood and 45 to Squaw Valley.

Look at staying in either South Tahoe (Harvey's or Harrahs) or in Incline Village. Check out the Peppermill.

Our last trip, we stayed in Incline Village right next to Diamond Peak. Skied there two days (once in a blizzard), drove to Heavenly, Squaw Valley, Northstar and Mt. Rose the other days.

Maybe you have a reason to stay in Reno, not in S. Tahoe, I wonder.

Agree w/Astein: Reno is not the skiing base. If you're flying into Reno, there is a bus from the airport to South Tahoe. And there are 4 slots (casinos) in South Tahoe.

Tks for quick replies.

The only reason for staying in Reno is for the super low room rate ($29-49)at nice places.

Any suggestions for CHEAP accomodations (motels, condo, whatever)closer to the Ski Resorts, mainly Heavenly and Squaw?

No frills, just safe and clean and rather nice.

Gracias!

Harvey's (www.harrahs.com) usually has some good specials (especially on weekdays). There's a lift right near the casino that takes you right up Heavenly.

Horizon can be even cheaper.

There are plenty small motels on the California side where casinos are not allowed, real cheap and real close to them casinos :)

Reno is too far for a ski base. Try the Crown Motel in King's Beach on the north shore of the lake. Close to a number of ski places. The boys stay there when they go on ski trips. Close to Northstar, Squaw, Diamond Peak, Mt. Rose, etc.

If low rates are your main concern - then stay at the north end of Lake Tahoe. In Kings Beach and other places along the north shore are several inexpensive motels that would be conveninet for Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, North Star and Mt Rose.

But that is a very, VERY busy week at Tahoe and you won't find many (any) bargains. Especially at any of the nicer properties at southshore you will find inflated rates. With both Christmas and New Years being on the weekends the entire time will be pretty much a zoo. And if the weather cooperates (by that I mean decent snow) the slopes will be VERY crowded

If skiing is the reason for your trip Reno is really not a good base - especially if the weather is stormy - if chains are required on I-80 or hwy 50, or the Mt Rose rd is closed, you you will face looong commutes. Plus most rental cars do not allow chains.

I'd just fork over the extra money to stay at the Lake.

Meant to add - the reason you are getting such good rates is that Xmas is a very slow time in Reno. New Years is busy but the rest of that week (and all winter really) is one of the cheapest periods for accomodations in Reno/Sparks. But one of the reasons for the low rates is because it isn't convenient to the slopes . . . . .

How about Carson City for Heavenly, closer than Reno in reality?

For crowd management at Heavenly and Squaw, 12/27,28,29 vs. 30/31/1, which is better for each one of these?

We plan to go to Mammoth as well; would it be smarter/better to do Mammoth 12/27-1/1 and then Tahoe 1/2-1/8? Crowds and prices of course.

Gracias.

Carson City is certainly closer for Heavenly and Mammoth but again, if it's bad weather to get to Tahoe you still have to clear over 7,000 feet to get up there. (Spooner Summit) Try to find a place at the lake if you can...you'll be glad you did in the end I think.

Tks y'all!!!

FainAgain, any suggestions on the California Motels, or something on Hwy 50?

We don't mind the traffic since we usually get to Slopes 1/2 hour before opening time, just the crowds on the slopes themselves.

Some have mentioned that Mammoth will be less crowded during 12/27-1/2, true?
