reno lake tahoe ski lodging, etc
I'd like to give my husband and son a long ski weekend at Lake Tahoe as a Christmas gift. They'd go over MLK weekend in January. Need to know how far the Reno airport is from either the Northshore Resort area or Forest Hills Resort. Has anyone stayed in either of those two places? They need to be walking distance to the slopes, have a clean but not necessarily luxurious place - pool and/or hot tub optional. No need to be near gambling or casinos. Both are intermediate to advanced skiers. Thanks

My partner's brother and his wife live full time in Northstar. They use to have a condo and then built a house. I've been there quite a few times going back to the days that Northstar was almost nothing. Northstar sounds perfect for you. The airport in Reno is about an hour away.
There are both hotel type rooms and rental condos at Northstar. Some are right by the lifts, others are a little further with a shuttle bus. It is a very family friendly place for all levels of skiing. I'd suggest you check soon to see if anything is available for that busy weekend.

I don't recognize the resorts you named. The Tahoe ski areas are generally about an hour from Reno airport (by car). I imagine there is shuttle service available, but I always drive to Tahoe, so I don't know details.
For skiing, Tahoe breaks into north shore and south shore areas. In south shore there is a fairly large town with a wide range of lodging, Heavenly Valley is at the edge of the town (frequent shuttles and a gondola for access), Kirkwood is maybe 25 miles away (charge for daily shuttle), and Sierra-at-tahoe is maybe 10 miles (free shuttles).
The north shore area is more spread out. I'm not sure about shuttles direct to the resorts, though it is possible to get around with bus service. Northstar, Squaw Valley, and Alpine Meadows are the big resorts on this end.
Squaw, Northstar, Kirkwood, and Heavenly all have lodging at the ski area (not cheap, though).

We've stayed at Squaw with a car, which we felt like we needed to be able to get to a decent selection of restaurants. We like the Squaw Valley Lodge, which is slopeside. For a week at the time you want to go, a one bedroom condo and four days of lift tickets for two people will cost us about $1600.
We've stayed in South Lake Tahoe without a car, which we found very limiting. The shuttle service between town and Heavenly wasn't very good. Now that there is a gondola from town to the hill, a car may not be as important. We've stayed at the Forest Inn Suites, which are close to the gondola, and moderately priced.
