Renaissance Wailea Resort

Any comments/opinions on this resort? We are planning on staying in the Mokapu section of the resort (oceanfront rooms)this February, but I am wondering now if it is worth the extra money.

Thanks!

I stayed here two years ago at Christmas. We had an oceanview room (not oceanfront) but it was still very nice. The landscaped grounds are beautiful. The lobby/open air restaurant were enjoyable, and the beach was gorgeous. It's nice to take the shoreline walkway to the other area resorts. I enjoyed our stay at the Renaissance.

Though I did not stay in the Mokapu section, I also enjoyed the Renaissance. I agree with schoolmarm about how the grounds and the beach were just beautiful. Only weakness that I can remember was the pool being small. But if you do not care about the pool like I did not, it doesn't affect you. (Maybe a second small pool in Mokapu section). I was there the 2nd week of Nov. and it was not too busy either. As for whether it is worth the extra money, I guess it depends how much time you will spend in the room looking out as opposed to using the grounds. I am not familiar with the extra benefits that come with the Mokapu package and the difference in rates.

We spent this Christmas and last there and had a great time. This year we had an ocean view room in the main building on the 6th floor, west view and it was lovely. Remember that the ocean is dark at night so your view would be in daylight. How much time are you spending in the room vs their great beach? One note, there is construction going on next door on the North side of the hotel. This gets very noisy in the early morning. I suggest reqesting the west side of the hotel because of this.

Got married on Maui 6 years ago & stayed 10 nights at the Renaissance. I believe they gave us a double upgrade but that may have been because we had not decided on our wedding site & the hotel was a consideration. We really enjoyed the hotel -- the beauty, the openess, the laid-back feel, oh, and the LAVA FLOWS! They gave us some very nice perks for being newlyweds. The best thing I remember about the hotel -- the view in particular, was the first time we looked out of our room at the ocean we could see the whales! This was in Feb. That was awesome. We went back to Maui 2 years ago & stayed at a B&B in Lahaina but of course we had to go back to the Renassaince for eats, drinks, to reminisce, and take it all in. I highly recommend it.

We just stayed here in early December in an oceanfront room (not Mokapu). I understand Mokapu features an additional pool and breakfast buffet, but I'm not sure it's worth the $$. The rooms are lower to the the ground, so you don't get the expansive view that you get in an oceanfront room in the main hotel. One nice thing is that it *is* quite close to the beach, so your walk there is considerably shorter. The rooms in the main part of the hotel are a good size compared to some others we have stayed in. There is also a refridg in the room. And as a previous writor noted, the pool is quite small, although the whirlpool is larger than usual, with three sections to it (like a cloverleaf).

NOTE - good snorkeling is to be found right off the beach here. Whatever you decide, I suspect you'll have a wonderful time. It's a superbly run property!
