Renaissance Wailea

A travel agent told me that she noticed an unpleasant smell in the morning at this resort. Has anyone else noticed this? If not for her comments, this would have been one of the places that we were considering.

Did she ask what her husband ate the night before? Seriously, I've never heard that.

Would you recommend the Renaissance over the Marriot Wailea?

Isn't the Marriott undergoing renovations?

The Renaissance is our resort of choice in Wailea. Having stayed there a total of about 8 nights, we've never experienced any unpleasant smells from the hotel. Highly recommended.

I stayed at the Renaissance in April and loved every moment of it. Walked to the Marriott for Spa Services. Upon my visit, I realized how much more I preferred the Renaissance.

There were no smells, room problems, or anything else negative during my stay. I highly recommend it.

FYI: The Wailea Marriott is under renovations until June 2006. So if you're planning on going after then... it looks gorgeous. Check out the website... http://marriotthawaii.com/marriott-wailea.html and click on renovations. Me, i'd rather stay in a newly renovated hotel.

The Renaissance has just been sold to the St. Regis this week and will shut down and go thru a major deconstruction-remodel (it really needs it!) and will be sold as condos-to- rent.
the project will take at least a couple years as the buildings will be torn apart and lowered, and reconfigured.
The islands' hotels seem to all be condo-izing and oversizing AKA NYC.
the time share thing is out of hand too.
Keep your eye on the package deals and what the airline packages offer.

I'm at the Renaissance right now and haven't noticed any unpleasant smells either in our rooms or public areas. If you're going soon, I'd pick the Ren over the Marriott as Marriott is still under renovation. The Ren also has better beach access.

One plus for the Marriott may be its low guest occupancy right now. We saw very few people at any of their pools and it's pretty quiet (except for the construction noise which didn't seem too bad) - I have no idea what the condition of the rooms are.
