Remembrance Day

Today is Rememberance Day and it brings to my mind something that happened a few months ago when I was travelling in New Mexico.

We were driving north leaving Santa Fe and found ourselves driving past the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Most people probably know of someone who died in uniform and most people probably have some feelings on Memorial Day. But just how do we envision the number of those who have died in uniform, beyond the few we personally know of?

When we drove past that cemetery and saw the rows and rows and rows of headstones, it was as if they were rows and rows of men and many not more than boys. To see them all together like that is a physical thing that cannot be done in your head alone. We cannot picture thousands of dead if we have never seen them in those numbers. Those headstones changed that at least for me. I could see just how many there were.

That cemetery has around 40,000 of them and is only one of 146 national cemeteries in the USA. So I have a thought for you on this Remeberance Day. Where is the closest national cemetery to where you live and have you ever visited it? If you have not, consider taking a drive.
