Relocation-Where?
I want to start over in a new state. I have lived in Florida all my life. I don't like Arizona nor California, nor much on the West Coast. I'm a freelance journalist, so I'm flexible. I don't like snow, but love cool to cold weather for awhile, anyway. I hate gray skies for too long a period of time. I love the ocean and the sun, mountains are good too. I DESPISE humidity. Want to get away from "big city" - but be close enough to one re: job.
Anyone know more or less of the place I would move to and be happy in? Thank you in advance.

You might try Afghanistan.

xxx
|
If you despise humidity, want to be near the ocean but don't like the west coast, I think you'll have to look outside the United States.
|
try Pakistan, is dry, warm and close to the ocean.
|
PS. There is lot going on over there that can cover
|
You've eliminated:
**all of the northern US (stays cold for longer than 'awhile' and gets very gray during winter)
**all of the west coast (specifically) **all of the midwest (humidity, no mountains, no ocean)
**AZ
**the northeast (long, cold, very gray winters)
**all of the deep south (humidity)

You have very little left. Possibilities:

Santa Fe (though I don't think Albuquerque is probably going to fit your criteria for a nearby big city).

Fort Collins, Colorado.

Several cities in North Carolina fulfill most (but not all) of your criteria.

Methinks you've painted yourself into a small corner.

May I suggest staying in Florida and spending that relocation money on some psychoanalysis?
|
You can't have ocean and low humidity - that's impossible. I think that the Denver area meets all your requirements except the ocean. It's sunny almost all the time, it's dry, and when it snows the snow is gone by the next day. Unless you're IN the mountains.
|
Live in San Diego and take small, short duration freelance jobs (and little vacations) to colder spots in the winter - NM, Colorado, etc.
|
California is a very diverse state. We have some of everything. What is it about CA that you dislike so much? You certainly will find what you're looking for here, somewhere. Otherwise, how about Oahu?

Princeton, New Jersey.

PaulandPenny:

You indeed didn't give much for us to suggest a couple of places....I know you said you didn't like Arizona...but there is a town called Page Arizona or Flaggstaff, Arizona. Flaggstaff is a bigger place than Page. Anyway...Page is only about 5 miles south of Lake Powell which is a very beautiful lake. I don't believe they have snow....but it does get cold during winter months...like around 30s or so. You would have the mountains(more like the red rock mountians) and the water although it is not the ocean...and you would have the sun ...and no humidity other than the lake moisture. Another place I can think of is Kentucky...in the bluegrass area...They are known to have good weathers, friendly people, beautiful lakes and waters...and the applician (oops...don't know the spelling) mountians. It may be humid but not nearly as bad as in Florida!! They have very few Big cities...most are towns. Lastly, I came up with Oregon...You wouldn't want Washington because it is known to rain alot!!!!!!! So that will apt to the grey skies...but Oregon is more sunnier than Washington...it has more of weather like California with some snow in some areas. I may be wrong about this...I only know of it what my friend tells me. Then there is Western Montana, NOT eastern Montana!! Beautiful, breathtaking, and small towns/cities. Only bad thing about Montana is the snow and coldness...and no Ocean. Hope this helps...Good Luck!!
(Don't go to Massachusetts!!!!! It is always grey skies!!! )

We would like to know what cities fall into our criteria in NORTH CAROLINA please. It's one of the places we though of (we also thought of TN)..but for now since Cary mentioned N. Carolina, which cities fit the bill - MORE or less please? Thanks.
|
NC is VERY humid in the summer. What do you consider a 'big' city. You might have the best job opportunities in Charlotte and it's between the mountains and the coast but anywhere in NC can get an occasional snowstorm (One predicted for Thursday). Companies are laying off people right and left here so the job market isn't that great right now.
|
Is North Carolina hurting really bad job wise? Seems like EVERY state is busy with downsizing & layoffs.

Come to the Land of Enchantment in New Mexico.
p

PaulandPenny,

I lived in various cities in NC for approx. 38 of my 40 years. Here's my take on NC cities.

Asheville--maybe your best fit; mountains will be less humid in Summer than other NC cities; a couple of hours from Charlotte; about 4 or 5 (I think) from Atlanta; beautiful little city; artsy; local branch of UNC (public college system); AND huge bonus--only about 4.5 hours to the coast (Charleston specifically).

Charlotte--shiny penny of a city, growing by leaps and bounds, questionable how much of its original NC character is left, but transplants from all over seem to love it--about 4 hours from the coast.

Winston-Salem--great little city verging on the western foothills of NC; about 1.5 hours to the mountains; 4.5 hours to the coast; several universities; some historical sites well-preserved; friendly & laid back town.

Greensboro--like Winston-Salem (and only about 30 minutes east), but a little more progressive & up-and-coming.

Raleigh--in the middle of the state; about 3.5 hours to the mountains; 2.5 hours to the coast; fairly diverse (lots of transplants, like Charlotte), but it seems to have retained its NC character. Fairly big city & capital of NC.

Wilmington--on the coast in southeastern NC; great small city. Of course it will be more humid in the summers, but you could cool off at the beach. It has charm & enough to keep you occupied if you don't need large metro-style attractions. This town would be high on my personal list.

Hope this helps some.
