Relocation Jackson

Just found out we may be relocating to Jackson MS. Any of you have recommendations for neighborhoods, school, or even just fun things to do or good palces to eat there? We are early-40s with children in elementary school. Most of our family is in the South but none in MS. Any help will be appreciated.

I live in Mendenhall, MS, which is about 30 miles south of Jackson. Most people would agree that living in the city of Jackson would not be a good idea. Their are many communities around Jackson that are great for families. Some are Clinton, Madison, Pearl, and Brandon, which are all relatively close to Jackson. Many other people choose to live in Mendenhall, and drive to Jackson to work everyday. That drive can get old very quickly though. I did it for a few years. Most of the towns I mentioned have websites describing their finer points. On a personal note, I taught at Pearl and that is a fine school district. As for things to do, just check the newspaper and community updates to find new and unusual things to occupy time. Jackson and the surrounding metro area are full of chain restaurants and the regular malls. If I can be of assistance, please feel free to ask more questions here.

I grew up in Jackson. Are you looking at private schools? Where are you working? I suggest living in Jackson- Madison is up and coming. I would not move to Mendenhall. I would go to the restaurant there- The Round Table. I disagree with jenstu13 about not living in Jackson. Where are you relocating from?

My son lived in Pearl for many years. I have two grandson's that graduated from Pearl High School and attended the grand schools. Been to Brandon, Clinton and of course Pearl for over 21 years. All these areas were very nice in my opinion. And my son always said stay out of the city of Jackson itself. Especially at night. He lived in a real nice neighborhood in Pearl.

My wife and I both lived in Jackson quite some time ago but neither of us would live there now. Working in Jackson is fine but the crime rate is very high in the city and the city government is not doing much to help. All our friends live in Madison. It's a 15/20 drive to downtown I would guess if you worked in town. The Madison/Ridgeland areas are nice.

Another vote for Madison.

I grew up in Jackson and would recommend the northeast part of town as well as the Ridgeland/Madison area as others have suggested. There are several good private schools in these areas.

Don't know if you're still in the market for information, but check our Rankin county, out near the reservoir. The area is booming, the schools are great. It's about 10 minutes from shopping and fine dining, and if you buy in the county, your taxes will be really low. Lastly, there's a great "quality of life" vibe out there - walking trails and parks everywhere, a brand new Craftmen's Guild building, etc.

We are in Madison, one child graduated from Ridgeland Hi school. Just moved out of Ridgeland last year. I would recommend any suburb area for elementary level schools. They all have their issues and drama. It's the norm. I would not suggest Jackson public schools at all. There are several areas in Jackson that are good low key neighborhoods with older homes for good money. If you are interested in private schools, and do not want the commute to the burbs, Jackson address would be fine. It's all what you make of it !

GOod luck!!
