Relocating with Children

Hello guys!! I am really wanting to relocate to Tampa, Florida. Due to unfortunate events, I have decide to come down South. I have heard/read so many positive and negative comments. From the internet and word of mouth. I found that there is a lot in subsidized and based on income housing. Why is that? Just when I think I have found a beautiful apartment, the reviews are horrible and frightening! Then...oh goodness the complaints of palmetto bugs aka roaches? I'm extremely torn. One minute I become excited, the next I'm worried I'll be stuck in KY the rest of my adult life -__- So, if anyone in the county/area/city could give me insight and which zip codes are ideal? Any confirmation would be welcoming!
Thank you so much!

33606 is the best zipcode in Tampa. Excellent public schools in that zipcode, but expensive real estate, too. 33629 is also excellent. 33609. Anything south of Kennedy Boulevard is considered the best part of Tampa, although there are many other lovely areas.

Palmetto bugs are just not a good reason not to live here. It's not like they're marching around in droves! If you're a gardener you will see them, but otherwise you really don't.

I don't know what you mean about the subsidized housing. Any city will have its share of income-based housing.

YES!! I was hoping that you would reply.
Subsidized house is similar to income based...they are monthly inspections, certain income requirement, certain amount of ppl can live in the home etc. It's regulated and they have to go by strict codes. Something I am not a fan of. I lived in a upscale community built the same way, and maintenance came in unexpectedly, left my lights in (while I'm trying to conserve). You can understand my frustration!

Ok, I can get over the palmetto bugs then haha

What are your views on Soho, Channelside, Hyde Park? Is Ybor city as scary as the forums say?
Yes!! I have a retired Navy friend that suggested the same zips. It is looking as though South Tampa is the way to go. Ive also been on job sites... Securing employment is the hardest challenge here (as it would be with any relocation)I starting to think with all of the sports that's the best route.

I wouldn't say Ybor is scary, but it's not a good neighborhood for a young family like yours. It attracts too much rowdy nightlife. It's more than fine during the day and evenings, but not livable IMO.

Soho is a nice neighborhood. You will hear it's full of bars, but they're along one stretch of Howard Ave and while they are packed on weekend nights with twenty-somethings, it's not at all dangerous, and the streets on either side are lined with nice houses, condos and apartments.

Hyde Park is one the very best neighborhoods in Tampa. It's characterized by bungalows lovingly restored, but also has condos (small complexes) and apartments. Post Hyde Park is the big garden-apartment complex, very nice, and Post Soho is under construction.

Channelside is the neighborhood of the port. It's not as walkable as it should be, and amenities have been slow to move in, but there are loads of shiny new condos and apartments over there. It would not be my first choice for you, but it's not dangerous or unpleasant.

Consider Palma Ceia, too. Fewer apartments and condos, but great neighborhood bordering Golf View, which is high cotton. Davis Islands is totally charming and has a lot of older but well-kept apartment buildings; I love Davis. Derek Jeter lives on Davis, but it also has modest family homes. Bayshore Beautiful and New Suburb Beautiful (yes, they like their cheesy neighborhood names here!) and Parkland Estates have some modest family homes, no apartments, I think. Beach Park, Virginia Park, Culbreath are all rather large homes on large lots, with a very few exceptions. Ballast Point and Interbay, which are closer to MacDill AFB, have everything from mansions to very sketchy blocks, so I wouldn't rule them out, but I would be cautious.

South Tampa has a real variety of neighborhoods, from blue collar to, well, Derek Jeter

Hey Tom, I would've never thought about that. You should read what folks are saying about the palmetto bugs. My daughter has bronchial asthma so their feces is a concern along with mold! I didn't fathom the thought of mold.. I guess it DOES make sense with the moisture. Yes, my friend actually has a condo in Oldsmar where she has her horse trained. Thank you so much. Thank goodness your friend was late that day.

I am going to shout this: IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO MOLD, DO NOT MOVE TO FLORIDA. You can't avoid it.

If you are uncomfortable with the idea of an exterminator spraying your apartment or house every month, Florda is not for you.

I lived in Palma Ceia and loved it. But Florida is buggy and there is mold.

Oh, Ackislander, not fair! I live in Hyde Park (next door to Palma Ceia), and we do not have an exterminator (in or out), nor do we have mold.

Honestly, people need to understand that the palmetto bug and its ilk--there are several kinds, actually--are beetles and not the small, reddish roaches that infest homes. They belong outside and they prefer to be outside; they get in through cracks and crevices that should be sealed in lieu of using insecticides. But they do not live in your house or build nests there or hatch eggs or anything like that. There is no reason to exterminate the great outdoors. All you're doing is killing frogs.

As for mold, well, it depends on what kind of mold, and it's a maintenance issue for your windows and roof, but it's not a certainty that you'll get indoor mold. Of course I agree that if you're particularly allergic to mold--most people aren't--Florida may not be for you.
