Relocating to Florida or Charleston, SC

Hi - I'm thinking of relocating to Florida. I live in MA and am originally from NY. I hate the winters and have an opportunity with my job to relocate and work from home. I have family that live in Naples 4-5 months a year so I am thinking about that area. My concern is that I won't be able to meet people in my age group (I am 49) - I'm afraid that everyone will be too old. Can anyone recommend any towns near Naples where that is not the case? I am also considering Charleston, SC so any comments on that are welcomed.

Thanks.

My wife and I owned a beautiful condo in Naples for several years. We sold it because we were too young to spend the winter there. We were 60.

I love Naples. It has fabulous beaches, good restaurants, and it is beautiful. But look at Venice, Sarasota (no nearby airports is a problem) and for someone your age, Miami.

Before you move down there, spend at least two weeks in August and recognize that the weather is like that from May to October.

But look at Venice, Sarasota (no nearby airports is a problem)

Sarasota has an airport (SRQ) serviced by few national airlines as well as 1 or 2 international airlines, so don't say we don't have a nearby airports. Then there is Tampa airport (TPA) that has just about every national airline and few international airlines. It's about 1 hour drive from Sarasota.

The plus side to this area is that we are somewhat immune to hurricanes. I've been living here since 95 and have not been threatened by hurricane but once, but it eventually went a different way so we didn't get hit. There is a very vibrant young population and very active nightlife and we also have a great concerts and day events that brings out the very young to mid-aged people. Blues Fest, food fests, free summer rock concerts, and so forth. Wonderful beaches on Siesta Key, Lido Key. It's a big town that still feels like a little town, for the most part. I run into many of our friends on regular occasion when I'm running around. I'm 52 and I love living here.

Thanks for the replies.

Sarasota is a little bit further north than I wanted to be. What about Ft. Myers, Bonita Springs or Cape Coral?

The few times I've visited Ft.Myers I have not been impressed. They do have an airport that caters to some domestic and international airlines.

Bonita Springs and Cape Coral? I may be wrong but they are mainly retirement communities. If I'm wrong, I apologize.

Unless you will be working in that area then I would pick Ft. Myers, but if you are working out of a house or nearby Sarasota then I would definitely choose the latter. Great theater, art galleries, and as stated above, great nightlife, restaurants, beautiful waterfront, #1 beach in the state on Siesta Key, etc.

That said, if I were you considering moving down here, I would fly into Tampa, rent a car and drive south to Sarasota, every community in between and fly out of Ft. Myers. Spend couple of days at each place and wonder around. That's the only way you will know what is available that interests you. I believe (but not sure) JetBlue, Delta, or AirTran fly out of both airports.

Sarasota Airport also services JetBlue, AirTran, Delta, Southwest and USAirways, so you may consider flying here first and then heading south.

If you're concern about weather, don't be. The temperature differences between Sarasota and Ft.Myers are very minimal if at all.

Good luck on your move, whatever location you choose.

How about the East Coast...Delray Beach is the first town that comes to mind for me....a bit over an hour to Miami, about 30 minutes to Fort Lauderdale; 2.5 hours to Orlando, 2 hours (or a bit less) to Naples....its a great town with hip restaurants, shops, great beaches....all ages but definitely not just "old folks". We moved to Florida 16 years ago (in our early 30's at the time) and absolutely LOVE IT....wish we had done it sooner & if I won 10 million bucks, there is no where I would like to live any more than Palm Beach County!

Charleston SC is a great town! It is not as warm as where you are looking, but the weather is really nice. I would definitely encourage you to go for a visit - it is a very cool town with lots going on all year long!

Past performance is no guarantee of future results!

The part of Florida where I grew up went 69 years without a direct hit from a hurricane, although there were some that hit 40-50 miles away during that time. Over the last 15 years it has had at least 4 direct or near-direct hits.

Check out http://www.hurricanecity.com/cities.htm#U (which shows that Naples, for example, had 4 hits or close brushes from 1960-1966 and then nothing until 1992, when it felt the effects of Hurricane Andrew - so you just never know)

Good advice from AAFrequentFlyer.

Visit at as many times of the year as you can, and visit as many places as you can if you are thinking about a permanent move.
