Relocating to Charlotte, NC area?

Hello,
We are considering relocating to the Charlotte area. Does anyone have any ideas what the job market is like for software engineers and what the possible salary range (general) for a senior developer might be?

Also, how is the commute from Rock Hill to Charlotte for work? Our friends are relocating there and sounds like a great place. What's the difference between Rock Hill and Fort Mill? How's Baxter village?

We are a family of 5 with small kids (8/5/4) and we are looking for a small town feel (not necessary to actually be small) with an acutal community. We currently live in north eastern MA. Probably in the $275-300K range, although if the salaries are good we could get into the $350K range without too much trouble.

Any advice or suggustions would also be appreciated.

There are a ton of old posts on here regarding this topic which I'll try & top for you. The job market & things overall are good. You have to weigh a couple of options when considering housing. How far/how long v. how much house v. costs. Personally (if I were working Uptown) there is no way I would commute from Rock Hill, but tons do it every day. The banks are probably the first place to look for most any type of job (if the job is applicable) due to their sheer size. I would prefer Ft. Mill to Rock Hill but there is a ton of growth there as well. One of the problems we face, is the unmitigated urban sprawl since the developers around here seem to be in bed with the County Commissioners. I'll top some for you.

The commute from Rock Hill to Charlotte is not ideal, but not too bad. I'd say 30 - 40 minutes, one way. It bogs down where I-485 and I-77 merge.

Rock Hill and Fort Mill are very different type places. Rock Hill has around 60,000 people and Fort Mill is basically a suburb of Charlotte. Personally, I'd choose Fort Mill, especially for the schools. I'd also highly recommend Baxter Village, especially with children. My parents have retired there and my brother and his family of 4 moved there about 6 months ago and both love it. Depending on the size of house you're looking for your budget could be tight though. House prices in Baxter have gone up considerably in the last few years.

Try www.bnbfinder.com. The Augustus Zevely Inn in W-S is good.

Oops, wrong thread...

This same thread has been done ad nauseam.

Many of the neighborhoods of Charlotte have a small town feel so don't limit yourself to outside Charlotte.

Another thing, traffic around Charlotte seems to be getting on par with Atlanta and commutes can be horrific.

I'd find a job first then find a neighborhood.

No way would I live in Rock Hill if I worked in Matthews. That alone would be a two hour commute each way.

Rock Hill to Matthews is probably about 30 miles. Once you got to 485 (from 77) you'd be traveling against traffic...Depending on the time of the morning, I would guess closer to 50-60 minutes, it would take longer to Uptown than to Matthews just because of the traffic flow.
