Wow! No smoking in bars in California! That's amazing. People smoke in bars in Oregon. The only reason I didn't suggest Portland is it might be too small for Europeans. Some love it, but it's not as cosmopolitan as Seattle, and I think many Europeans who move here are used to more cultural opportunities. But, there's enough to do. Perhaps they should put Portland on their list, too. It's a heck of a lot cheaper to live here than Seattle, I can tell you that for sure!

I've always been surprised at how many smokers I encounter when visiting relatives in the Portland/Seattle areas. Maybe I just frequent the wrong restaurants and bars because I despise how bad my clothes smell after a week in the Pacific Northwest.

I think the area might actually suit their needs and they can always hop on over to Maui if they need some sunshine in January.

Believe it or not, I found Salt Lake City to be more "smoker friendly" than many areas out west...I am a smoker and was elated upon arriving at the airport to have a place where you could smoke within their airport. Nice city, very pretty and fabulous skiing, good airline connections if he's traveling. I certainly would consider this a choice as well unless they want AWAY from cold weather for a few years.
