Long Island City often has hotels that are much less expensive than Manhattan. The Country Inn and Suites or the Verve are often recommended and may be in or close to your price range.
It's a short subway ride to Manhattan.

Thanks, abram, I'll check Long Island City.

Tomfuller, the HI hostel is $240/night, close to twice what we're willing to pay.

I'd just go to Expedia, plug in Long Island City and your dates, and see what you get. I'm sure there are at least a few hotels there in your price range. Then do some research to make sure they're not hell holes.

The HI hostel is about $50 per night for a bed and locker in a shared dorm room with 6 or 8 other people - so it can be a very good choice for students.

For adults who want a private room - not always the best choice.

There is a brand-new Howard Johnson hotel directly across the street from the Airtrain in Jamaica. Given the location and ease of travel into Penn Station from there, that may be a consideration. It's not the nicest area of town, but it's fine for one night, and this is a cheap hotel that gets good remarks from guests.

I'm curious how light you travel to Europe. How much luggage will you have to "lug" to your hotel? If more than a carryon each, I'd question trying to get to midtown using the trains, and if you're thinking taxi, you'll end up spending as much for transportation as you're thinking for the night's hotel.

The only issue I have with Doug's plan is your timing? I'm guessing you will have a few hours in Manhattan in the evening and then want a few hours again the next morning before your flight, so back and forth from Jamaica, not once but twice might be a consideration.

Doug - would there be a way, via public transit, to get from the Howard Johnson to LGA for an early morning flight?

Possibly. If there is a LIRR that gets you to Woodside at that hour, then you can transfer to the Q70 limited bus, which runs every 20 minutes and gets you to LGA in about 15 minutes. Or you could take a car service for about $20 to $25. If you save enough on the Howard Johnson, then I'd spend the savings on a taxi.

This is a question, I address to all, not just yourself. If you just spent X dollars to see Italy, why is saving a few dollars, so important in NYC. You are talking the price of a lunch in Rome? Why tie yourself in knots?

Sorry - but I would not reco staying any place in Jamaica - it's a definitely not the safest part of the city and I wouldn't want to be on the street there after dark.

"You are talking the price of a lunch in Rome"

...and how nice to be able to afford that lunch in Rome just by economizing on a quick overnight layover, right?

I'll mention AirBnB (if the host stays in the home, I don't think there's the same legal issue as if you rent an entire apartment).

Another site that I've found very helpful: lmtclub.com
Google for a promo code for free membership (there's always one available).
I wouldn't expect anything stunning, but the discounts for known hotels can be very good.

Those of you who have ever read one of my trip reports know we travel as inexpensively as we can. It's the only way we can afford to go anywhere. We wouldn't have booked a trip to Italy at all without the cheap Emirates fare, and we have enough points on Delta and Southwest to get us to New York and back home, so our domestic travel is paid for.

While we're in Italy, we will stay in inexpensive hotels or use Airbnb. I've already found several Airbnb apartments in good locations with lots of good reviews for less than $100/night.

NeoPatrick, we are just bringing one carryon each, both of which we hauled from JFK to midtown in June, so luggage isn't a problem.

nytraveler, you're right - we're OK with sharing a bathroom, but we want a private room. The HI hostel, at $240/night, is out of our price range.

IMDoneHere, that's a good question. While I'm sure we could spend $100 or more on a lunch in Rome, I can't picture us doing it when we could use that amount of money for three or four lunches.

Basically, we can't get a flight home the night we fly into JFK, so I figure we might as well spend the night in the city, enjoy the morning and early afternoon there, then get to LGA and fly home.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. I appreciate the help!
