Relatively Inexpensive NYC Hotel?

We're spending a night in New York in mid-May on our way home from Italy.

The Jane has one of their bunk bed rooms available for $125. Given that we're mostly interested in a place to sleep, we're OK with the small room and shared bathroom, but one without the bunk would be nice.

Does anyone have any other suggestions that might work for us for a similar price? We'll fly home the next evening.

How about Priceline? What areas would I want to search in?

The closer you are to the touristy areas, the higher the cost. Since you're only staying one night, you might consider simply staying at one of the hostels, like one of those on the upper west side. You'll be right next to Central Park and a short subway ride to the touristy stuff. Good luck!

I'd look into airport hotels for a short layover, where you are simply looking for a place to sleep. The biggest consideration for me would be the commute from airport to hotel and back and how much time to enjoy the layover.

I just did a fast look on Hotwire, using your return date.

The only place that came in less than the Jane, was in Long Island City. And that was with the "secret hot rates"

IF the Jane can be cancelled without penalty/cost; I would book that now and then keep looking.

Check to see what the LaQuinta on 32nd is running. I like it for many reasons.

LQ is mid $200 for LeeAnn's night.

starrs Jan 27th, 2015 01:35 PM

What is LeeAnn's night?

Perhaps I missed that in this thread.

DebitNM Jan 27th, 2015 01:37 PM

It's not. I know happen to know it. Not my place to publicly state it.

Okay. Seems a bit strange for someone other than the OP to reference a specific date and the rates for those dates. Others could check for rates if they had that information. I respect the OP's desire to not share that info on a public forum - just find it weird for another poster to be able to find rates for recommended hotels when the rest of us cannot. I won't waste my time with other suggestions here.

$215 is not "relatively inexpensive" it's dirt cheap for Manhattan - where the average hotel room (3* tourist) has a rack rate of about $260 per night.

The Jane is generally the cheapest decent place in town since it is clean and pleasant and the low rate is due to the tiny room size and often shared bath. I have checked a couple of other budget properties and the best I could find was $160 plus tax per night.

You might have a look at Long Island city - but doubt you will find anything less than that - although you might get a real bed.

$215 is not "relatively inexpensive" it's dirt cheap for Manhattan Not sure where that came from...

OP is looking to be less than the $125 at The Jane.

C'mon now, Lee Ann, you've been on this board long enough to know rule 1 = what's your limit?

WillTravel Jan 27th, 2015 04:21 PM

What do Priceline Express and Hotwire offer on that night?

WillTravel Jan 27th, 2015 04:22 PM

The exact night makes a huge difference. Start looking at Hotel Tonight, and you can see how prices vary greatly by day.

DebitNM Jan 27th, 2015 04:34 PM

See my first post. Nothing in NYC purport were lower than The Jane, only 2 places in Long Island City.

DebitNM Jan 27th, 2015 04:43 PM

S/b "In NYC proper" I searched on Hotwire. Didn't bother with Priceline as I doubt it will yield much difference.

ElendilPickle Jan 27th, 2015 05:17 PM

Weird - I thought I posted a couple of hours ago...

Starrs, thanks for the suggestion. I checked that La Quinta and it's about $100 more than we want to spend.

BigRuss, it would be great if we didn't have to spend more than $125 for the night.

We're doing this on our way home from Italy, since we can't get a flight home the night we return to JFK, which is May 12. DebitNM and I have been discussing this trip elsewhere, so she knows my travel dates. :-)

Basically, we're getting to JFK about 7:00 p.m., and leaving on the 13th from LGA at 6:00 p.m. So all I really want is somewhere to sleep, and then we can have a little time in New York the next day before we go to the airport.

Clarkgriswold, the Larchmont looks like it would work. Thanks for the link!

The link to the HI Hostel. Probably your cheapest option to not come home with bed bugs. https://www.hihostels.com/?linkid=98...FatxQgod9TEA1g
