Rehoboth Beach vs. Dewey Beach

Going 5/27-6/2; usually go to Ocracoke @ that time. What we like about Ocracoke - walk everywhere, good nightlife, uncrowded beach, motel room rather than rental houses. Would Dewey Beach or Rehoboth Beach be better for us? We're a 50's married couple who are bikers.

Thanks for your help!

Hi

It's going to be a bit cooler up here than Ocracoke but I think you'll find Rehoboth or Dewey to be just fine for you.

Rehoboth is a bit larger and has more restaurants but you can get around quite easily by walking or bike. Dewey is possibly more homes than condos and quite accessible to restaurants. Dewey lies between Rehoboth and Ocean City Md.

Not a lot of motels in either and nightlife at that time (that's kind of before season starts) may be hard to find. There may be more nightlife in Ocean City (about 20 miles south). But the beaches should be uncrowded.

The season at Rehoboth starts on Memorial Day weekend just as it does in Ocean City.

You will, IMO, find a LOT more nightlife in Rehoboth than in Dewey..the latter is what some consider a singles/partying atmosphere kind of place. Rehoboth covers more territory, is significantly more "upscale" on average than Dewey..think $ SEVEN MILLION in terms of the newest oceanfront builds near Silver Lake; Rehoboth has a lot more restaurants and with a significant gay population that usually leads to gentrification.

These places are VASTLY different from Ocracoke and even from Nags Head, etc.

There will be lots of bike riders in both Dewey and Rehoboth and traveling between the two.

Agree beaches will be LESS crowded then than later.

Unless you are a very serious party animal or travel with a dog, I'd recommend Rehoboth. As noted above, Dewey has a reputation as being for the partying crowd (and is also known for allowing dogs on the beach), Rehoboth for families and a sizable gay population (kind of a paradox, but as the town's name translates "there's room for all"). Rehoboth has more choices and variety for eating out, Dewey has better bands and drink specials. Bars and restaurants in both Dewey and Rehoboth should be fully operational by Memorial day. That can be a crowded weekend, most motels will full up as lots of DC folks come down- but less crowded than the 4th of July since most local kids are still in school.

Aside from biking around town and to the beach, Rehoboth now has a bike trail. You can ride to the next town north, Lewes and avoid the traffic of Route 1. Lewes is a great town for exploring - you can also ride the trails at Cape Henlopen State park.

I just returned from my first family vacation to Rehoboth. I must say I loved it! We stayed at a new hotel, Hotel Rehoboth. Very nice! The only drawback is that is two and a half blocks from the beach but they offer a shuttle ride to and from. We never had to wait for more than a minute or two. There were tons of restaruants to choose from and a lot of cute little shops. More upscale than OC, Maryland. Would definitely return!
