Redwoods
I have 4 days to drive from Portland to Laguna Beach. We want to drive through the Redwoods for some sightseeing. We leave May 16. What is the weather thru there, will there be fog, rain, or sunshine this time of year? Any hotel recommendations?

You might want to come down #101 and see the Redwoods in N. Calif. or continue on towards Healdsburg and visit the Armstrong Woods in Guerneville. Less crowded than Muir Woods which is just N. of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. You could drive down Route #1 from Carmel to San Luis Obispo..or drive from SF down #I-5 (boring but fast) to and through LA> .. May weather should be lovely all over. The "June Gloom" sets in in June..but with the crazy weather patterns who knows........
We can make the drive from Healdsburg (just N.of SF) to LA using #I-5 in about 6-7 hours, stopping only for gas.

What did you want to see besides Redwoods? 4 days is not verylong to travel from Portland to Orange County if you plan much sightseeing along the way.
But if it is mainly just the redwoods, then you have plenty of time as kleroux says. What is your hotel budget?

I want to cut over to see the Redwoods in Northern CA. I guess spend the night in Crescent City. I think that is as far as I can go the first day from Portland. Hotel budget--around $100?

We make Seattle-Roseburg in one day regularly, so Portland-Crescent City is doable if you take the freeway to Grants pass and cut over on 199. You have plenty of time, though, so why not go from the freeway to the beach a little earlier (Eugene-Florence on 126 or Winston-Bandon on 38?) to see the coastal scenery.
