Red Sox Spring Training

Hi - Never been but going in early March! - would appreciate advice on everything - which area airport to use, where to stay, how far is sanibel, how warm will temps be, etc. Flying from Maine to escape the winter blues. Thanks!

Two years ago we scheduled a family trip to Sanibel in March. We had been to the area numerous times and all of those trips we had stayed on Sanibel. So we decided to try something different and stayed on the other side of the causeway in Ft. Meyers at the Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa and unknowingly wound up in a hotel that seemed like an annex of Red Sox nation (being Yankees fans we were amused, but not very happy, which is besides the point.) Anyway, Sanibel Island is about a ten minute drive (if that) from the hotel. We had a number of problems with the hotel, and really wouldn't recommend it, but if you want to stay in a hotel with every Red Sox fan by all means head to the Sanibel Harbour Resort. A better choice, however, is to stay on Sanibel Island itself. I don't know how many tickets you have to games, but you can occupy your time away from the field in Sanibel's beaches, restaurants, and shops. The Jacaranda is particularly good. I think the island has mostly recovered from the devastating hurricane season, but am not sure. You can use Jet Blue to fly into Fort Meyers Airport. The island is about a 30 minute drive from there (maybe a bit more.) Recommendations on places to stay - Sundial Resort - absolutely beautiful, great customer service, good restaurant and has a Kids Club if you are traveling with kids. Casa Y Bel - similar to Sundial, also a beautiful resort. Or you might want to try renting a condo for a week - Sand Dollar is a great place to do so. We rented a condo there that was beach front with two bedrooms, living room, full kitchen etc. The weather will be in the 70s to 80s most likely - definitely bring the sunscreen. I made the mistake of not doing so one year in March and left with a terrible burn.

Hi- We went to Red Sox spring training two years ago. It was great. We stayed on Sanibel at Sanibel Moorings. The place was very nice, 1 and 2 br condos. Have fun.

Hi, Withane! I'm also a transplanted Maine-iac who now lives year-round in SW Florida. I've lived here for 6 years now, and I know the area pretty well. Hubby and I have tickets for a few Red Sox spring training games. I'd love to help you plan your trip. You can email me directly at [email protected]. That might be easier than going back and forth on this forum. But meanwhile here are a few tidbits:
--Fly into Ft. Myers (RSW) airport.
--Sanibel is not too far, but the traffic is always VERY slow getting over the (one and only) bridge to the island.
--I might suggest that you stay in a hotel in Naples. It's about 45 minutes to the ballpark, and there is lots to see and do in Naples after the game ends. Beautiful beaches, too! (I can help you find a reasonable hotel there.)
--Temps will be very warm. Expect it to be shorts weather. (YEA!)
Where in Maine do you live? We might just know each other, as I lived there over 20 years!
