Red Rock Canyon Las Vegas drivablity?

Can anyone tell me what the drive is like from Las Vegas to and on the loop through the Red Rock Canyon Park? I am from the Gulf coast and only used to driving on flat terrain? Are there curvy mountainous roads with drop offs? We will be going on the last Thur. in April. How much traffic may I encounter? I don't want to have to drive slow and delay traffic behind me. Thanks for any info. Decb

It is an easy drive and fairly flat. Since you drive through the valley, the roads are not mountainous. Everybody drives slowly there to be able to enjoy the scenery. I never encountered much traffic there.

It is a good idea to visit Red Rock Canyon in late afternoon - less traffic and the evening sun brightens up the colors.

You will see on the map that once you enter the Park, you stay on a one way road that loops through the entire Park. There are many many places to pull over, there are parking/look-out spots for watching the climbers or going on trails. No one drives fast, I think the speed limit is 20mph or something like that.
People also jog on the road.

From downtown ( we would rent our car from a place near the Palms) it is about 30 min at most. You drive through that part of town then you are in the desert then you pass the sign for Red Rock Canyon- you can, of course, see it miles away.
Take a picnic..we have been there many times at different times of year..it is just beautiful and a great time spent out of the casino atmosphere :)

you may not even manage 20mph hour if you encounter the 'burro' wandering across your path!

Red Rock Canyon is a lovely drive, very easy and mostly flat.

Thanks for the info. A picnic sounds like a good idea. We will have to keep the food away from those donkey's though! Decb

I did exactly this drive when I was in Vegas for a business meeting last year and I enjoyed it thouroughly. I think that it only took me about 30 minutes to get there from the city - that may not be exact but it was quite easy.I was alone and had only the assistance of my GPS and there are not any intimidating roads there.
Enjoy it!!

The car rental company always gave us a little map .. it is extremely easy to get to Red Rock Canyon.
Be sure to stop at the gift shop when you arrive..I sent dozens of post cards from there :)
The photos of the Canyon are just so wonderful.
