Red Rock Canyon
 

My husband and I are spending a few days in Las Vegas at the end of March. We would like to visit Red Rock Canyon. Are there tours just to Red Rock or do you suggest renting a car? Thanks!

Don't know where you're staying, but if you want some away-from-the-crowds time, look at the JW Marriott Resort, which you might be able to get cheap on Priceline. Fabulous place, and around 15 min. from the canyon.

Definitely rent a car and do it at your own pace. My favorite thing about Red Rock is that you will usually encounter Burros along the way that seen to have their own version of a security check point- each car stops and they check inside for goodies!

Ajax, I would think a car rental (even an one-day convertible) would be cheaper than a tour and you would be able to stop anywhere and anytime you want. It's an easy drive with almost no traffic. We were almost alone when we were there. I do fine it head-clearing to get away from the neon for a little while when we are in Las Vegas.

Another area you might want to consider if you have the time is Valley of Fire State Park about a hour northeast of Vegas off I-15. If you can be there at sunset and you will see how it got its deserved name.
If you can get on one of the ranger led tours at Red Rock Canyon they will point out rock art which is easily missed.

We took a tour bus in 2000 and found it very informative and fun. I don't think it could have been too expensive, but I can't remember. We got it at The Flamingo Hotel where we were staying. The tour guide was very entertaining and full of tidbits we wouldn't have learned had we gone on our own. They took us up to a house once owned by Howard Hughes and we got to go inside. It was very interesting and the scenery was beautiful from up there. I'm sure however you go, you'll enjoy it.
