red lodge, montana
Can anyone recommend a place to stay in Red Lodge, Montana for one night? How about a place to eat? Is this town worth a stopover while touring the eastern side of Yellowstone?

You do realize that the Beartooth Highway is closed this year from mudslides so you won't be able to go in to Yellowstone on Hwy 212.

I have been to Red Lodge. It is pleasant enough but without the allure of the Bearthooth Highway a lot of attraction to go there fades. The Best Western is a good place to stay. We tried the Yodeler and it was ok, but not air conditioned.
In terms of road closure, the road in Yellowstone over Dunraven Pass, which connects Tower Falls and the Canyon Village area is still under repairs. That means if you want to go to Canyon from the northeast entrance, there is no option but to take the long way round through Mammoth Hot Springs, then go south to Norris Junction, and turn east on the connector to Canyon. (Well I suppose one could drive back to Cody and come in the east gate and turn north at the Lake and go through Haydn Valley to Canyon. But that is really the long way.) |
