Recommending books about SFC a No-No?

I read recommendations for hotels, restaraunts, tours, etc. in San Francisco on this board, which have been quite helpful in planning our upcoming trip there. So, I thought I'd recommend a series of novels I've recently discovered whose author does a superb job in describing the streets, neighborhoods, and surrounding areas of SFC - along with some good history about them. They have really helped increase my knowledge and appreciation for SFC, which I just thought others here might also like to look into for their trip planning. But I don't see my posting anywhere in this forum, so guess you can't recommend book titles and authors -- is this right?

mclaurie Sep 11th, 2004 08:25 AM

Wrong.

Marilyn Sep 11th, 2004 09:41 AM

What is SFC?

Lovejoy Sep 11th, 2004 09:51 AM

SFC is one of the out of the waty tourist destination in New England area of the USA.Its known as the Sherwood Forest Club,or an "Off-season nude recreation for nudist/naturist couples and families in Northern New England"

Marilyn Sep 11th, 2004 10:05 AM

You learn something new every day. :-D

mclaurie Sep 11th, 2004 10:08 AM

That's hysterical. I thought the OP meant San Francisco (which was mentioned in the first sentence) so gave a link to a thread to novels set in California :))

Marilyn Sep 11th, 2004 10:13 AM

mclaurie, I thought that was a possibility, although I live here and have never heard anyone use SFC to refer to any part of SF. So feeling like an idiot, I googled the initials and got a huge range of stuff, none of it location related. So I swallowed my pride and asked, and...who knew?:-))

seetheworld Sep 11th, 2004 10:21 AM

Where do people put their keys when wondering the "streets, neighborhoods, and surrounding areas"? :D

Betsy Sep 11th, 2004 10:23 AM

LOL, Marilyn. Remember there're no dumb questions :-d

lbaboyd Sep 11th, 2004 10:29 AM

Geez, I must really be off-base. My mistake, folks. The SFC I thought most would follow is an abbreviation for San Francisco City, meaning the CITY itself as compared to the whole greater area, which might be abbreviated SF??? Some interesting takes here -- I'm laughing with you :-)....and still learning. Bear with me, pls.

Marilyn Sep 11th, 2004 10:30 AM

seetheworld, you don't want to know.

Hi Betsy!

Marilyn Sep 11th, 2004 10:34 AM

lbaboyd, we all appreciate the laugh, believe me. We call San Francisco "SF" or "The City." The larger area is usually referred to as The Bay Area. There is also the North Bay, the East Bay, and the South Bay (but no West Bay, for obvious geographic reasons).

Post the novels here on this thread. I'm sure we'd all like to know about them. And have a great trip!

lbaboyd Sep 11th, 2004 10:38 AM

I know I'm still learning...and doing something wrong ???? Earlier, I posted a reply to mclaurie thanking him/her for the example -- but I don't see my posting, even though initially it was there. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong??? Have patience with me, and maybe I'll get around to those great novels I brought up originally. Sorry folks :(

Marilyn Sep 11th, 2004 11:10 AM

lbaboyd, your post recommending the novels is there. Just click on your name and the left side of the screen will have all the posts you have contibuted to.

As new threads are started, the old ones drop down unless an addition is made. Perhaps you are not seeing your post because it has dropped off the first page, which has 50 posts. Hope that helps.

antlori Sep 11th, 2004 11:13 AM

I'd like to see recommendations for novels about the nudist area in New England (LOL)!! Maybe we'd get an answer to the key question!

Patrick Sep 11th, 2004 11:19 AM

I can BARE-ly understand this entire thread.

Kal Sep 11th, 2004 12:40 PM

I may grow some hair to pull it out. b(

"SFC=Southern Fried Chicken"? ~:>

Now I guess it's my turn to go get the dozen do-nuts! :-d

Scarlett Sep 11th, 2004 12:55 PM

Scarletts Fodorfriend Club?
Seriously French Countryside?
SanFranciscoCharacters :D

La, I am hallucinating, thank you lbabyoyd...
Thanks M!

Kal Sep 11th, 2004 12:57 PM

Scarlett Flies to California?

Marilyn Sep 11th, 2004 01:05 PM

That would be lovely, Kal!

Here's what I got when I googled SFC:

Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong
Sexual Freedom Coalition (which apparently has an event called the Sex Maniac's Charity Ball!)
Small Farm Center
Scottish Funding Councils
Starfleet Command (!)
Singing for Change (Jimmy Buffett)
Societe Francaise du Cancer (pardon lack of accent marks)
Sustainable Food Center
Singapore Film Commission

And approximately 1-1/2 million other references! Is it any wonder I decided to ASK? :))

Scarlett Sep 11th, 2004 01:08 PM

That does it!!
I am going to San Francisco to observe only!! the Sex Maniacs Ball (that sounds sort of Monty Python-ish...the other ball?)

Sooooo F-ing Cool :D

Kal Sep 11th, 2004 01:10 PM

No prob, Ms M...but will you be getting the 12th do-nut? :-"

Hmmmm...Sex Maniac's Ball INSTEAD of the Yountville GTG???? Or no difference? =-O

Marilyn Sep 11th, 2004 01:14 PM

Actually, that SFC with its Ball is in London, but we do have the Exotic Erotic Ball here in SF at Halloween, and it is quite something.

Substitute for Yountville? I don't THINK so!

Scarlett Sep 11th, 2004 01:16 PM

I really have to convince the Yankee that Yountville is a real place that has good wine LOL

I am up for a trip to London too M!

Hi Kal ((L))

Marilyn Sep 11th, 2004 01:19 PM

lbaboyd, here is another lesson. This is what is called "hijacking a thread," and it's not a very nice thing to do and we all apologize, don't we? :-D

Kal Sep 11th, 2004 01:20 PM

Marilyn,
I KNOW I do....:^o

Scarlett, 'lo Luv! :*

Scarlett Sep 11th, 2004 01:20 PM

Yes, honey, we do!
But the question was answered anyway :D

lbaboyd Sep 11th, 2004 01:31 PM

What's got me puzzled is I thought I was posting this thread on the California board. I'm not even sure what board this is???? Back to my original purpose, I guess I should start a new thread and make sure it's posted in the California board. I've enjoyed all your different takes on this... been fun reading all your pokes at my goofs. cheers. :-)

seetheworld Sep 11th, 2004 01:40 PM

Ibaboyd, don't post another thread! The confusing thing about this site is that individual states posts all fall under the United States. You didn't make a mistake when posting. Sorry if my poking fun offended you.

Marilyn Sep 11th, 2004 01:53 PM

lbaboyd, no, no one is poking fun at you! We're just trying to help, honestly!

Jocelyn_P Sep 11th, 2004 02:06 PM

I had no idea this was going on over here! Thanks for the laugh, all!

lbaboyd Sep 11th, 2004 04:19 PM

Really, I'm not offended by any of your posts. I enjoyed everyone chiming in. I had a good laugh too. And I do thank those who helped me learn some things along the way. I gotta run right now, but I'll be back to add something about the novels I think people heading to SF (see, I learned to drop the C already):)- and others who have an interest in the City - will enjoy, if they don't already know about these books and its author. Believe me, they're good.

FainaAgain Sep 11th, 2004 04:52 PM

SFC is San Francisco City as opposed to SFV - San Francisco Village or SFM - San Francisco Mall, or maybe "C" is for "California", you know there so many San Franciscos in other states.

Scarlett Sep 11th, 2004 04:53 PM

There is a Florida in NY too :D

FainaAgain Sep 11th, 2004 05:00 PM

And why should we read books if all the info is right here on this website :)

No, seriously, doesn't matter how vague is a question, like: "I'm going to SF for 10 days, what is there to do" there will be at least half-dozen "good samaritans" to answer the question and to put down anybody who (gasp) recommends search or Google.

FainaAgain Sep 11th, 2004 05:04 PM

Our whole group first went on a tram tour (downstairs) and then we split. The "able bodied" hit the rides, the rest went to shows, some of them informative by the way.

FainaAgain Sep 11th, 2004 05:04 PM

Hmmm... my computer is acting up, sorry, it should've been a reply to another post.

shaz60 Sep 12th, 2004 03:17 PM

Faina-

Your mistaken reply sounds like it was meant for the NE nudist colony answer. It is not for the faint of heart when the non-able bodied at the colony go on the rides.

FainaAgain Sep 12th, 2004 03:49 PM

LOL Shaz, I typed a reply to a Hollywood Studios question, and somehow ended up here. But after reading your comment I am not angry at my computer :)
