Recommended Restaurants in Charleston SC

A group of friends, 6 of us, will be spending the long weekend in early November in Charleston. I'd welcome recommendations for places where we'll be fed well, emphasis on moderately priced regional food. We'll be visiting a range of places, so prices aren't as important as the food. We'll have cars so suggestions for out of town will be welcome, too. Tell me what you know.

Great, thanks. (I forgot to do a search, didn't I.)

I've read your thread now, DebitNM, as well as your reviews, and made a list. I'll look for reviews of the others mentioned and I think I'll have it covered. Thanks so much.

I've heard there are new places opening up all the time. If anyone knows of others, please do tell.

I'm finding mentions online that Carter's Kitchen has closed. Can anyone verify this for me?

JanetKMR, your first 3 were also DebitNM's top 3 and I'll add Hominy Grill to the list. I'd heard about it and thanks for the reminder.

They had a fire; then the owner's of building decided to keep the restaurant for themselves. Too bad!

The restaurant scene in Charleston just keeps getting better! Besides the classics in the heart of the historic district, look to Upper King St. and all the side streets that connect into it for the latest, and in many cases, the most innovative new restaurants. We have a culinary school here that just keeps graduating top notch chefs, eager to open their own restaurants. So they do! New “classics” IMO are The Ordinary, (a strictly, only, fresh seafood place that used to be a bank, complete with vault), The Grocery (a lot of local farm ingredients), Edmund’s Oast ( for a really large assortment of beers), and Xiao Bao Biscuit (like no other Asian food you’ve had). We have culinary tours (a couple of companies) that are fun and that give you a sample of foods at restaurants—might be fun for your group.

Away from the peninsula in West Ashley, the Glass Onion is a casual place for the best Fried Chicken you’ll ever have (Tuesday nights only). Middleton Place Plantation, also out of West Ashley, has a very nice restaurant, if you’ll be visiting that plantation.

Thanks kathleen. We'll all be leaving on Tuesday so the best fried chicken will have to wait. I do plan to visit Middleton Place earlier in the week on my own and I'm pleased to see they do lunch, so that's now on my list.

I'll be passing on your suggestions of new places, adding them to the previous list already shared. Thanks so much.
