Recommended restaurants between the Civic Center and Embarcadero in SF?
We're going down to the City in early January for a performance at the Opera House. Will have a dim sum lunch but need somewhere to have dinner before catching our train at the Ferry Building around 8 p.m. Ideas? We like Vietnamese, Thai, Indian, Mediterranean, and great hamburgers. Italian as well, but our hosts are Chinese. Suggestions?

Perbacco on California St. has consistently fabulous northern Italian (Piemonte) food. Their cheese selection is one of my favorites. Just thinking the fresh tarajin pasta with pork and porcini ragu has me salivating. Right next door is Barbacco, the small plate cousin to Perbacco. We love this place too. I like it because the "small plates" are not too small, but just the right size.

Slanted Door is in the Ferry Building--mostly Vietnamese/fusion, a little noisy but very nice. I had lunch there last week and really enjoyed my meal.
Coqueta is a cozy space at Pier 5, just to the left of the Ferry Building (as you're facing the Bay), and is excellent for tapas and other Spanish-leaning dishes.

If you have to catch the ferry at 8 - I would dine on/near the Embarcadero so you won't have the "stress" of waiting/taking public transit if you are running late and are not near the ferry.
We're having dinner at Perbacco tonight. Sam's is always fun, and a "old time" SF institution. La Mar is on the Embarcadero and has nice Peruvian food.

Stuuuuu....keep forgetting about the highly regarded Le Mar.
On our "to dine" list.
Very good lunch last Friday at Fog City but a bit too far from Underhill's route.
5 hour pork and porcini mushroom suuuuugoooooo at Prebacco's.

My wife & another friend had the suuuuugooo/raguuuuu last night. Not enough of the suuuugooo/raguuuu for the amount of pasta served. My dish was better - Agnolotti - pasta filled with roasted meats & savory cabbage, sugo d'arrosto. Wonderful sauce.
