Recommended escorted/coach tours for fall colours

Sorry, I am repeating this post to include some forums that I did not tag or tagged wrongly or because message appearing in the wrong forums in Fodors ( seems to have some bugs in the tagging software today :)

My husband and I ( in our 60's) would like to visit Washington DC around 7 Oct-20 Oct and would like to take a relaxing tour to view the fall colours, after or before we take in the sights of Washington DC.

It would be great if the tour starts from Indianapolis as we are based there, but of course we could fly in and out of Washington on our own and start/end the tour there.

We could do the Blue Ridge Parkway/Asheville/Great Smoky mountains ( hopefully can include Charleston as well) or New England. Our priority is the first, if possible ( would it be past peak in New England then? we have also visited Boston before)

We would not want a tour that is too rushed (preferably not >2-3 hours ride between cities each day), and would prefer comfortable accommodation and great food.

Thanks in advance for your help

When I think of great fall colors, I think of New England because at their peak the colors are intense and because country roads there offer endless picturesque views. However, the foliage is likely to be well past its prime by the end of October.

Were I you, I would consult with the travel desk at my AAA office and the people at affordabletours.com. The Great Smokey Mountains, Asheville, and Charleston would make a wonderful trip and colors there may be hanging on until late October.

The Blue Ridge Parkway would be my suggestion.

There is, I believe, a train from Indianapolis to Washighton through Cincinnati and some colorful scenery in Western Maryland, depending, of course, on the schedule.

I agree with happy trails about AAA. If you are not from the US, your home auto club like AA in the UK may have member arrangements with AAA.
