recommended cheaper hotels around thanksgiving
 

HI all

I am planning to stay 7 nights with hubby from 27/11 this year but am struggling to find hotels in my budget in manhattan, even in Paris I was able to find something decent for $180per night but this city seems outrageously expensive!

we want to be centtrally located as we only have 7 days and want to be able to get to most of the sights within 20 minutes by subway and go out for dinner at night and not have to spend 30 minutes getting home at night.

any suggestions for reasonably priced hotels around this period? i heard some hotels release specials around thanksgiving.

So how much do you want to spend. Your "reasonably-priced" and "cheaper" comments aren't helpful unless the $180 in Paris is meant to be your budget.

What prices are you seeing? Are you willing to bid and pay upfront?

around $180 per night , if shared bathroom is necessary so be it. just want to be near subway stops and good restaurants/bars nearby

Do a search on booking.com for your dates. Then pick a price range (there is a range $140-$209) to narrow your choices. Then work backwards based on the map and ratings. A quick search of a week starting 11/27 showed 101 properties available on that basis. You can narrow further based on location, ratings, specific features, etc. When you have narrowed down come back here for more specific comments on your favorites.

Basically, this is the most expensive week of the year in NYC. You need to look at hotels in Long Island City or Woodside in Queens. There are hotels that are within a couple of blocks of a subway station and then a few to as much as 20 minutes from Manhattan, and I think that's the best you're going to get.

But even at this normally cheap hotels, you may pay more than $200 for Thanksgiving week. Your budget is simply too low. I'm not aware of a single hotel that releases specials around Thanksgiving time. Christmas, yes. But Thanksgiving no.

I really doubt that you will save anything by using Priceline, and if you do, you'll have to make the bid about 3 months out. It's far too early.

The Country Inn and Suites Long Island City is (right now) $140 per night that week. Grab that room. The hotel is one block from the subway and then either 1 to 3 stops from Manhattan depending on which line you use (and less than $20 by taxi from midtown if you stay out late and don't want to deal with the subway). You can always cancel if you find something better, but you will not find anything cheaper.

Hotels in Paris are considerably cheaper than in Manhattan - no matter the star level/time of year. Manhattan is about on par w/ London (at least at the top end - there are more budget friendly properties in London)

I'm not a Manhattan expert (only been there a few times) but IMO your expectations aren't at all realistic at Thanksgiving.

Doug has given you your best hope - book it before it is gone . . .

Your problem is the dates you've picked. Actually there ARE hotel sales around Thanksgiving. The problem is you want to arrive on T'giving and stay through the tree lighting the following week. If you were to come for the 20-27 or even the 23-30 you would find much lower prices. The Rockefeller Center tree gets lit on the Tues or Wed. after T'giving and EVERYONE wants to be here then.

The Hampton Inn Soho (which includes breakfast in the room rate) is $170/night plus tax Nov. 22-29 and $245/night plus tax on your dates.

You are coming at the busiest and most expensive time of year - and $180 isn't a lot except in Jan/Feb.

I believe that the Jane is one of the cheapest hotels in the city -although rooms are minute - and some may have hared baths. Also you need to allow for the 18%% tax - so you're really asking for a room for about $150.

I think you will have to shop VERY carefully and not be picky about location. If you find a deal now and pay in advance you may get a lower price - but frankly I don't really know what to recommend.

The Newton, areliable budget property on the upper west side, has a double with a shared bath for about $190 per night. It's in a great area and right near the subway - but the closest sights are Central Park (a couple of blocks) and the uptown museums - a 15 to 20 minute walk depending.

However, if you want this - I wold book NOW - because it wil be gone way before Thanksgiving.

(And yes, for hotels, NYC is more expensive than Paris at the bottom of the range - since we have so few places with shared baths that are decent.)

I found them on About.com saying they are reputable and all their apartments are legitimate. they offerred me an artist loft in Grenwich village but before I book I wanted your opinions .

Renting apartments for less than 30 days in NYC is almost always ILLEGAL. Don't do it.

Agree this is illegal. It is frequently a scam - with no actual apt - or rented to several different people. But even if it exists and is as promised it is still illegal.

No, it cannot be trusted. There are millions of scams and illegal items posted on the internet - there is no one policing this - they have enough trouble tying to police child porn - they can't catch everyone advertising sales of illegal items/services.

Seriously, do what Doug suggested.

If you find a better deal, then cancel that hotel and grab the new deal. But for the week you've chosen in NYC you're not going to get a better deal - and prices will continue to go up.

Hey Guys! thanks for your advice. I've narrowed hotels down to two. where would you stay if you had to choose between these two hotels if you are looking for something well located to sights, metro and restaurants/bars

Hotel 17, 17th street- looks like 3 blocks to nearest subway, not sure what the area is or if there is much nightlife, bars and restaurants around the hotel .

hotel 31, east 31st street Midtown. near madison avenue and empire state building, this one seems to be the better location in terms of proximity to subway and distance to major attractions. I am a keen shopper whether it be department stores or bargain hunting/outlets (not upscale designers), is there much shopping walking distance from these locations?
