Recommendation on where to stay in San Diego

Planning a trip to San Diego this June. Will be traveling with another family, there are 4 adults and 4 kids ages 2,6,8 and 11. We will be driving up from San Francisco, going stopping at Disneyland and Legoland along the way. We have been to San Diego once many years ago but can't remember what area we stayed at. We want to get a condo near the beach. Since we will already have done a few days of amusement parks we want to spend a few days just playing on the beach.

San Diego is the southernmost city in California - so we usually say we are driving up from San Diego to SF - or down from SF to San Diego.

As for condos near the beach- there are a number of things you can find on Google - and I like the Pacific Beach area for being centrally located/close to the beach - and close to Sea World

You might also try Paradise Point - for bunglows/apt type lodging - and friends of ours here in San Diego used to rent a place there for a week in the summers when their kids were small for a "stay vacation". :) It's on the bay side but has sandy beaches, etc. http://www.paradisepoint.com/

Yeah, my husband corrected me on that too, I was posting late at night. We are driving DOWN to San Diego from San Francisco. Just looking for a more kid friendly area, doesn't have to be too centrally located, just close to the beach.I want to avoid an area with a lot of bars, don't really need a lot of restaurants close by, we plan getting a place with a full kitchen so we can cook. We will probably avoid going to Sea World since we will already have gone to Disneyland and Lego Land, I can only take so many amusement parks. We might go to the San Diego Zoo. We will have a car and from what I remember of being there before, it didn't take too long to drive anywhere.

Check out Carlsbad or Solano Beach - or even the Wyndham in Oceanside.

Also look at DelMar.

While no one seems to be able to count on the weather anymore, it still might be prudent to mention that June comes with a marine condition we call, "June Gloom."

The beaches are usually overcast and a bit on the cold side up until afternoon. Inland is nicer.

I agree with LSky. If you can delay your trip until late June or early July you will be more likely to have warm sunny weather.

You might like Mission Beach. I jog in the area regularly and it has a lot of condo rentals. Also Oceanside, which is about 25 minutes north of San Diego.

mission beach does have a lot of homes you can rent. some rent the downstairs as one unit and the upstairs as another - so this could work for 2 families. i'd also look at vrbo.com - maybe in the coronado area. capri by the sea in pacific beach is popular with families and can be found on vrbo as well.

I remember sitting on the beach in San Diego wearing a zipped up fleece jacket during "June Gloom." It didn't bother my children, though, who were probably 7 & 10 at the time. I have pics of them playing in the ocean and building sand castles. I was freezing but they were so happy to be playing on the beach they didn't even notice the weather.

We were in San Diego last week and the weather was glorious. Mid-70s and sunny every day. It was the best trip weather we have ever experienced - just perfect.

Have you heard of the Sommerset Suites? It is centrally located in Hillcrest. Although not directly by the beach it is very centrally located. 10 minutes to downtown or to the zoo and right by the freeway for easy access to other places!!

All rooms offer full kitchens and free breakfast each day.

I love staying in La Jolla! Check vrbo.com for apartments and condos.
