What do you consider "mid-range"?
Be advised that there is no one area that is central for all the sights! The closest (i.e., the area closest to the most sights) would be what is referred to as "midtown."

Assuming you want to see a wide range of sights - from the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island (access from downtown) to the major museums (many of them upper east or west side) - midtown would be your best bet. You can easily take the subway to anything you want to see - and walk to theaters, much shopping and some sights.

Times Square is popular with many - but is very crowded, loud and can be tacky. You could also do Midtown east or west or central park south - all of which are somewhat more subdued - but still quite busy.

With two kids you may want to consider either the Affinia group of hotels (all suites) and generally a good buy in the moderate range. Or buying throughh Priceline. for this you would have to buy two rooms (each room is guaranteed for only two people) but the hotel you get for the price can be surprisingly good (just learn how to bid so it isn;t an unpleasant surprise)

There are a bunch of threads above with specific ansers on this if you do a serach. Just be aware that prices change readically by season (from November through New Years hotel prices often double at least). When will you be coming?

Vivienne:

The Milburn Hotel located at 242 West 76th Street, West Side is a very good value for families. Website is www.milburnhotel.com - Small kitchen can save you on breakfast and frig for snacks. Good places to eat within walking distance and the subway is on your doorstep. On one of our stays we stayed here and were satisified.

As others have told you the time of year will have a bearing on the cost.

The website for the Affinia group is www.affinia.com

We've stayed at two hotels in midtown Manahattan in the past year, the Avalon and the Grand Union. Both are on East 32nd Street, a couple blocks from the Empire State Building and various subway lines. The Avalon is nicer. We paid $229 at Thanksgiving for a two room suite that was fine for us and our two daughters. The Grand Union is more spartan, but still fine if you don't need the frills. We paid $96 in August for a room with a queen bed. Both have lots of reviews on Trip Advisor. Good luck with your trip!
