Recommend Restaurant in Point Reyes area
 

Need a restaurant recommendation for the Point Reyes area. We've eaten at Manka's and the Olema Inn, but would like something a bit more casual this time. Seems like most of the restaurants in the area get mixed reviews. We'll be staying in Olema so don't want to go as far north as Tony's. Any recommendations?

We had a wonderful lunch at Nick's last year. The food was very fresh and well prepared and we had a nice view of the water.

razzledazzle, have you eaten at Stellina's recently? This place gets very bad reviews on service so just wondering about your experience. Betsy, we will be driving from Santa Rosa so we're stopping at Nick's Cove for lunch on the way to Olema--haven't been there in over a year so we're really looking forward to it. I do business in West Marin so I've eaten lunch at the Station House Cafe with clients a number of times over the years. I find for the most part that it is only ok now, not great. It isn't as good as it was years back.

<< Lunch at Nick's Cove - we really enjoyed this place - we had a table next to the window overlooking Tomales Bay. DH spoke to our waitress about local oysters and she described them for him - her husband is a manager at Hog Island. He tried four types and then had a butternut squash soup. I started with clam chowder and it was excellent - not the starchy version with rubberized clams that so many places present. The clams were briny, tender, full of flavor and garnished with a bit of crisp bacon. We then shared Bouillabaise linguini - clams, shrimp and mussels - very light and flavorful with fennel - perfectly al dente. >>

Nick's it'll be for sure. I love oysters!

Has anyone tried Saint Rose, west of Sebastopol?

Saint Rose closed about a month ago--too bad because it was a great place to eat. The owner hung on as long as he could, but finally had to give it up.

We stopped at a small c-store for lunch and had a great Pastrami and Corned Beef sandwiches, along with some good potato salad. We liked stationhouse at dinner.

For casual, I recommend Cafe Reyes, in Point Reyes Station. Very low-key, but friendly and good. They now have a wood-burning pizza oven, which adds charm to the interior, and the pizza is delicious. The house wine is decent, and there is a very nice outdoor eating area.

Betsy, and others who love oysters: I recommend visiting Drakes Bay oyster farm on Drakes Estero in the National Seashore. Same site as the former Johnson's oyster farm, but they have cleaned up the operation. They have prize-winning oysters. You can buy oysters and eat them right there at the picnic tables. The owners offer free tours of the operation, which includes cutting-edge research being done on oyster growing. The place is right off the main road (Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, which goes all the way to the lighthouse), at the top of the Estero.

There's a little cafe now at Drake's Beach which has very nice food, but the hours are erratic, so you will want to call ahead and see if they're really there. The cafe is right on the beach, so it's very pretty.

For those who like to picnic, the Palace Market in Point Reyes Station has a lot of good choices--nice wines and cheeses, a few nice breads, and the prepared food I've had from the deli case has been good. (Since many cottages and hotels have microwaves now, this can also work for dinner!)

The beauty of Stellina is its location(downtown Point Ryes Station) and its food. Service really is ok nothing I would worry about.

There is also the Marshall Store for anyone wanting casual atmosphere(think by the side of the road) and some of the best damned oysters to be had anywhere out there. As you head down HWY 1 from Tomales it will be on your right.

Salivating and noting for our next trip!

Just know~you need to shuck your own oysters @ Hog Island. They do give you oyster knives. I don't know about Tomales Bay.

Tony's in Marshall has the best BBQ oysters in the area. Don't let the "weekend bikers" scare you.
