Reco for photography book for a gift?
 

Posted this on "other topics" and got no answers so trying with my sage friends on the US and Europe boards. Would love to hear any recos for a book of or on photography for someone who's using a digital slr and getting very good. Could be a coffee table type book or something more practical. Thanks.

May not be what you're looking for but I gave the book "Earth from Above: 366 days" to a couple who are photographers (digital and film). Such a beautiful book, I would love to have a copy of my own! I hope you find what you're looking for :-)

Not a coffee table book, but I bought my college son Rick Sammon's Complete Guide to Digital Photography (107 lessons on taking, making, editing, storing, printing, and shring better digital images) with a tutorial cd rom included. Son moved from 35mm to digital a year ago, and he likes the Sammons photo books, so maybe he has others - on the cover it lists his web as ricksammon.com -
If they live nearby and you get any book from local bookstore , or even amazon, they can always return if htey have. Another option, if you know what they already get, could be a subscription of a photo magazine for a year.

What about a book about well known photographer(s)?

Are you giving this as a gift or is it for yourself? I think either way, this is something good to get. You said the someone is getting good at photography, so this someone must enjoy it and by getting a book on something they enjoy is GREAT so they can learn more about it. Costco has the newest National Geographic book out called "Wide Angle" and it is shots from around the globe from their photographers...this is a great coffee table book. I love books like these, I also like the "from above" books.

It's for a gift and that Nat'l Geo. book does sound great. I've decided I want it NOT to be a "how to" book and more something for inspiration. Will check out "Wide Angle" and would appreciate any other non-how to thoughts.

I would recommend "Digital Photographer's Handbook" by Tom Ang. If he is using a digital SLR and getting pretty good, then this book will take him to the next level.

Anything by Ansel Adams (Range of Light is a classic) can inspire a photographer, whether they have 100 yr old wet glass plates or the latest digital! And, if scenery isn't their favorite, the "Rolling Stone: The Photographs" is an amazing portrait gallery.

I can't give any specific recommendations (sorry), but I agree with your "non how-to" idea. Unless you know what specifically the giftee needs help with, most how-to books would be too generic and broad to be of any use.

As for inspirational books, I'd say find out what his/her interests are (landscape, architecture, people, etc.) and look for something in that category. I personally prefer landscape photos, so a book with architecture or cityscapes wouldn't do much for me. Sorry that this is more of a "what not to get" kind of post.
