Reasonable hotel between Austin & San Antonio

I will be passing through SA and Austin in Oct. and will stay for a couple of days. I am looking for a safe, clean area that has reasonable hotel rates. No frills. We will only be in the room to sleep.

Any suggestions will be helpful! Thanks!

We love New Braunfels as a place to stay. You have to try their famous barbecue there. Here is a website for accommodation

Thanks! Is there any one place that is better than the others? Is this area basically safe all over so no area to stay away from?

Thanks, I appreciate your response!

Hi again!

I was just thinking...could you give me an area in Austin that is safe, less traffic, etc. to stay in also? I want to have a back up plan just in case we stay an extra day.

I just don't want to come out in the AM and my car is gone LOL

Thanks!

Austin and San Antonio are only a little over an hour's drive from each other. There are only two town in between the two cities with lodging: San Marcos and New Braunfels.

Any of the chain hotels in Austion along I-35 will be just fine, as they are all in good areas. (The "bad" side of Austin is several miles East of I-35.)

o2,

Traffic will be an issue anywhere that you are trying to go in Austin. There are several hotels off of I35 that are convenient but you will have to deal with traffic. What area of town are you wanting to cover. The Omni downtown is nice and it is close to many places in downtown Austin. IF you would rather be in the north part of town, there is a Renaissance sp? in the Arboretum( right off Hwy. 183 (Research Blvd.) and Loop 360.

Sorry I didn't notice that you said "no frills." Maybe try some of the hotels in South Austin around I35 and Ben White. If you will be here on the weekend, make sure you look ahead of time, because it is football season and Texas games bring in big crowds.

Hi o2 - Well, Christie beat me to the punch and I agree with her comments but I'll give you my 2 cents FWIW. San Marcos is a college town (Texas State Univ.) and has plenty of reasonable places to stay. New Braunfels is known for its recreational/vacation facilities, river parks and its German heritage (with several good German restaurants, etc.) so it also has a lot of places to stay. Priceline or similar should turn up something that will fit your needs.

As for Austin, the I-35 corridor is a good bet but I wouldn't rule out downtown. It has a lot of good, reasonable hotels and is safe. Agree with Christie that the only area you might want to shy away from is east of I-35, but there aren't a lot of hotels, etc in the area anyway. The only other thing I might mention since you're going in Oct is to factor in any weekends that UT has a home game. Although Austin is fairly large and has an abundance of hotels, many can get filled up quickly on those weekends.

Thanks everyone! I love this site! Everyone is so helpful. :) I said I don't want frills because I have asked for hotels in other states and people start mentioning places that are $300-$500 a night minimum! LOL

I was thinking of chancing it and not making reservations but I never thought about the games and they could be sold out. Although we would be booking it for Oct. 2nd and 3rd which is a Monday and Tuesday night.

Anyway, thanks for givingme the ideas and the heads up about the areas to stay. Now I can go looking and not worry I am going to end up facing the runway at an airport with a land fill off to the side! LOL ( That has happened to me and it was at a 4 star! )

Thanks again!
