Reaching out for help with a family visit to New York in July
My wife and I are planning a trip with our 3 daughters (age 17, 15 and 13mos). My teen girls want to visit (2 days) in NY City before we head out to a family wedding in Wading River, Long Island. We are driving direct from Toronto, Canada, leaving July 19, staying near Manhattan on the 19th - 21st. The wedding is on Sunday 22nd in Wading River, RI, after which we will then head back to Toronto on Monday 23rd.
My wife and I have been to NYC a couple of times and we just love to walk all day long. We are looking for somewhere reasonably priced for our stay as close to Manhattan as possible. Is it possible to get a room for all of us around $150?
Would it be a better option to rent a hotel off the island and take the train?
Where would be the most convenient location to get on the highway to Wading River, RI
Also looking for an itinerary of things to do/see.
Hope I'm not asking too much. Thanks for your help. Very much appreciated!!

No, sorry It would be impossible to get a room in NYC at any time of the year for $150 for all 5 people (even if one is a baby)Hotel taxes are about 14% extra
Very few hotels here have room for that many people anyway, so it would have to be a suite or 2 rroms. And $150 for any room is only a possibility very off season like January and February . The average price for a moderate not fancy hotel can be $250 or more and that may not be big enough for all of you anyway.
Even suburban hotels, at least those convenient to travel into the city every day would be tough for the price. With a baby you would have a hard time commuting by public transportation,If you drive in, parking can be up to $40 per day.

You will need either 2 rooms or a suite based on city fire laws.
You might look at the Eastgate Towers which is a converted apt house and has all suite, some will be appropriate for your group - but no, the price won;t be near $150. But it will probably be all you can get in the city. Plan on at lest $30 per night to park your car in a garage.
If you want to stay in Long Island city you may find somethng for less - but in that case I beleive will have to get 2 rooms and the area is mixed use and, while safe, may be deserted in the evening and not have many services. If wil put you on the LI side of hte city to go to the wedding. But be sure you get one of the hotels close to a subway sto - you don't want a 15 minute walk before you get to the train.

July is peak season here so hotels can get premium pricing, so you will probably need to open the wallet a little more. That said, priceline might be a great option and you can probaly find something in the $200 range.
Also try The Travel Inn, parking there is FREE and there is a pool, the kids will love.
STAY IN MANHATTAN, taking trains to get into and out of the city will be a pain, since you are here such a short time, and you have a little one needing to get out of the hot weather, July is likely to be VERY hot.
Another suggestion would be The Grand Union Hotel, also in midtown and rooms have 2 full beds, so you might be able to do this in one room.
If you stayed in Manhattan, to head out to Long Island take 34th St east to the Midtown Tunnel and head out to the Long Island Expressway to the wedding, that's probably the best way to get out of Manhattan to Long Island.
Have a great time while you are here.

There are some hotels in Long Island City that are just outside Manhattan by subway and much more affordable than staying in Manhattan. the Country Inn & Suites will take a family of 5 in a 1 bedroom king suite with sofabed for $180/night plus tax for your dates. i personally think that will be very crowded, but that's up to you. They have some free parking but not enough for all their guests somdon't guarantee it. You'd be in the right direction toward Wading River.

In Manhattan, Radiocityapartments.com has a 1 bedroom apt with either 2 double beds plus sofabed or 2 queens plus sofabed for $225-275/night plus tax. You can find nearby parking using bestparking.com

Wading River is waaaay out on Long Island, and the only really feasible way out there is to take the Long Island Expressway (LIE) I-495. As travelbuff said, to get to the LIE from Manhattan, you would take the (toll) Midtown Tunnel at 34th Street on the east side of Manhattan. It will take you 2 hours without traffic to get there from the city.
For a compromise between accessibility to sights in Manhattan and a more reasonable hotel cost, you could look at hotels in Long Island City as nytraveler suggested. This part of Queens is one subway stop from the east side of midtown Manhattan, and also where the LIE starts after coming out of the aforementioned tunnel.
While a little farther from midtown Manhattan, you might also look at hotels in Brooklyn. There are chain hotels like Holiday Inn Express and La Quinta close to the R subway line in the Gowanus neighborhood (20 minutes to the financial district), which bridges the classic brownstone neighborhoods of Carroll Gardens and Park Slope. You could also look for hotels in the hipster neighborhoods of Williamsburg and Greenpoint (the latter, however, being not so direct for getting into Manhattan).

We recently stayed at the Doubletree Suites on Times Square. We got it "same day" on Hotwire, and because it was identified as a "suite" under amenities, we knew exactly what hotel we would be getting. I don't know if they permit 5 people in a room, but they might, because the rooms are actually two full rooms -- living room with sofa bed and kitchenette, separate bedroom with king bed. The only problem is I think it would be way more expensive to book this in advance. We paid $125, and parking was in a garage across the street (on 47th) for $35.00 with validation from the hotel. The hotel was great, the only problem was it's location (fronting on 7th Avenue and Broadway at 47th Street -- not exactly the calmest, sanest location in the city .
