Re: the pronunciation of a certain fruity drink...

Okay, I've been thinking about this...and I need to know what the consensus is among my fellow Fodorites....in your travels, when you order one, do you order a strawberry DACK-erie, or a strawberry DIKE-erie? My mother says the latter and it drives me batty. Okay, everyone weigh in...

micheleh Jul 29th, 2003 04:50 PM

I have never heard dike-erie. Only Dack-erie

trishfromoz Jul 29th, 2003 04:51 PM

I don't know anyone who has ever ordered an strawberry dacquiri, is it an american thing? I am sure that no matter which way you say it, it would have to be quietly.

irishdame Jul 29th, 2003 04:53 PM

Strawberry daiquiri's, in addition to other flavors, are sold everywhere in the US.

irishdame Jul 29th, 2003 04:54 PM

oh...and it's DACK-erie!

puddy Jul 29th, 2003 04:55 PM

I was about to only the former is acceptable, but I decided to check Websters. Officially, both pronunciations are correct, but I have never heard it pronounced as the latter.

And while we're at it, a daiquiri is technically rum, lime juice, and sugar.

This guy agrees with your mom:

Considering that it's named for a town in Cuba, the Spanish pronunciation of the vowels makes sense.

cigalechanta Jul 29th, 2003 04:57 PM

On the East Coast, it is Dike-erie.

puddin Jul 29th, 2003 04:59 PM

Puddy, are you serious? DIKE-erie is also correct? God, I hate it when my mother is right. But, I have only heard her plus like one other person in my lifetime pronounce it that way. Hey, thanks for checking Webster's for us. I didn't have one handy...

GoTravel Jul 29th, 2003 05:00 PM

I've never heard it pronounced DIKE-erie and I bartended on the East Coast all through college.

puddin Jul 29th, 2003 05:03 PM

I live on the East Coast too, and like I said, have only heard it pronounced DIKE-erie once or twice.

puddy Jul 29th, 2003 05:03 PM

I too live on the East Coast and have never heard it called a DIKE-eri.

I've lived on the east coast all of my life and never once have I heard it pronounced Dike-erie.

In Boston, we say Dike-erie. Lived here all my life too.

obxgirl Jul 29th, 2003 05:22 PM

Cigalechanta, Must be a Boston thing. I've lived up down the east coast of the US and never heard DIKEerie..

What a hoot puddin. Learn something new everyday.

puddin Jul 29th, 2003 05:22 PM

Anon, thanks for the reminder...I still always reach for the book.

puddin Jul 29th, 2003 05:25 PM

I agree, obxgirl! Hey, fair enough, cigalechanta! Maybe it is a Boston thing.

Dan Jul 29th, 2003 05:29 PM

I've heard "dak-ry" in New Orleans. Frozen daiquiris have become quite popular in the French Quarter over the last few years.

axelrod6 Jul 29th, 2003 05:33 PM

Just to be helpful - and because I also could not believe that anyone on any coast says "dike-erie" - I looked it up in the amazing, huge Random House Unabridged Dictionary. Not only is "dike -erie" there, it is the preferred pronunciation! I too had only heard "dack-erie," over many years, in many East coast cities, and with a son who has tended bar. Goes to show, some Mom's (though not this one) are always right!
